The Lady Eagles honored their four seniors with a convincing 55-36 win over rival Central on Senior Night, Feb 2.
Head Coach Mike Whitling was pleased with the performance.
“This win was huge for our seniors,” Tyrone Head Coach Mike Whitling said, “Their drive and determination to pursue their goals this season has been inspiring, and watching our team rally behind them has been incredible.”
Tyrone’s senior class is Alayna Woomer, Rylan Crowell, Claire Lehman, and Elise Volders.
The game started with a wonderful display of compassion and sportsmanship when the Lady Dragons allowed Tyrone senior Alana Woomer, who suffered a season-ending injury in just the second game of the season, score one last basket as a Lady Eagle.
While the Lady Eagles lost Woomer’s skill on the court, they gained her knowledge of the game. She has been like another assistant coach on the bench this year, encouraging her teammates and helping however she can.
“I think we played well,” Woomer said. “It definitely wasn’t the best I’ve seen us play against them, but we got the job done on senior night, and it was a great win for us.”
The Lady Eagles shot well in the first quarter. Sophomore Lola Woomer led with 10 points in the first quarter. Senior Rylan Crowell put up 6 points, followed by senior Claire Lehman with 2, and Elise Volders with 1.
Tyrone was up 22-10 at the end of the first quarter, but Central was able to come back in the second and close the gap to single digits.
The score going into half was 27-19.
Freshman Raylee Woodring came out hot in the third quarter, knocking down her free throws and working in the paint. Brielle Parker scored 3 points, two of them also coming from inside the paint. Lehman also started to find her rhythm, scoring 5, and Woomer scored 6, all from the paint.
In the fourth quarter, the ladies struggled to hit threes but made up for it by driving to the hoop.
The game’s high scorer was Lola Woomer with 17, followed by Claire Lehman with 11
“I think that last year has been a huge motivating factor for the team this year.” Whittling said, “Seeing how close we were to being able to compete for a District championship has fueled us throughout the season. Also, I have noticed a huge improvement in our understanding of the game and the leadership of this team to make this experience their own.”
