Voyzey Defends District Title; Boys 4×100 Gets Gold, Getz Takes Silver

Ten Tyrone track and field athletes qualified for the state meet in Shippensburg

Rust can accumulate due to lack of use. Tyrone’s defending state champion high jumper Erika Voyzey missed substantial time this season due to injuries, so success was not guaranteed for the defending high jump state champ.

Clearly, rust doesn’t bother Erika Voyzey.

The Tyrone junior won the high jump after successfully clearing 5’4, and then went on to tie the all time meet record of 5’8 held by Northern Cambria’s Janae Dunchack.

“I came back without any expectations. I just wanted jump after being injured basically my entire junior year. I’m just so happy and grateful to be back,” said Voyzey.

“It was gratifying to see Erika break the D6 record in the high jump at 5-8, the best height in AA statewide this year.  Erika is having fun again and keeping it simple, a lesson for all of us,” said Tyrone Head Coach Steve Everhart.

In addition, the boys 4×100 relay team of Nick Getz, Cameron Bakhsheshe, Conner Harper and Parker Mitchell took home gold, winning the event handily with a time of 44.10 seconds, a half second ahead of the second place team from Bishop Carroll.

“It was also gratifying to see the boys 400 relay team put a fork in Bishop Carroll, whose relay boys had been trash-talking ours for the past couple weeks at Invites,” said Everhart.  “Carroll had posted the top seed at both WCC and at Districts based on a host of Alice in Wonderland times that even the local press had called into question but which the BC boys apparently thought had some basis in, I don’t know, natural law as it operates in the space-time continuum, with their lead runner purportedly breaking the state record in multiple events.  Let’s just say that he was fast, but not fast enough to keep up with the hype.”

Senior Nick Getz also had an impressive outing individually, placing 2nd in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Getz is undecided about whether he will run either event at the state meet next Friday, in addition to the 4×100.

Senior Garrett Hunter had a season best throw of 171-11 in javelin, good enough for third and a trip to Shippensburg. Cullen Raftery also placed third in triple jump, leaping his way to states at 41-7.

Other place winners for the Golden Eagles included a 4th place finish for the boys 4×800 relay team of Adam Zook, Jake Makdad, Conner Stroud and Joe Kohler.  Kohler also ran well in the 3200, finishing 5th and Jacob Meredith was 7th in the high jump.

The boys placed 2nd overall as a team to end a season that saw them go undefeated in duel meets.

With states in Shippensburg Memorial Day weekend, the Golden Eagles are looking to leave their mark as a team, one last time.
