The Tyrone Golden Eagles Track and Field team took on opponents and the weather at the 2026 PIAA District 6 Championships, and ended with seven athletes qualifying for states by finishing in the top three or meeting the time or distance standard, and 24 athletes reaching the podium by placing in the top eight overall.
Due to a rain delay on day two, the meet didn’t end until almost midnight on Wednesday, but that didn’t put a damper on Head Coach Brad Kanuch’s mood, or his athletes’ performances.
“I am extremely happy, and tired. Yesterday was amazing,” Kanuch said, “We had a few things that didn’t go our way early with the rain and our tent getting mangled. But the kids responded very well and took care of business. After delays like that, the sport can get very mental.”
Kanuch was thankful for the commitment of the athletes and the community for toughing out a late night on day two and being there until the end.
“Tuesday and yesterday are why I love this sport and this community. We finished the meet at about 11:45 last night, and there were Tyrone faithful out supporting these kids,” Kanuch said.
One of the highlights of the meet was the girls continued dominance of the 4×100 relay. The team of seniors Nicole Ramsey and Claire Lehman, junior Sarah Chichester, and freshman Raylee Woodring won the event for Tyrone for the seventh year in a row.
“We have a target on our back every single year,” Kanuch said. “We overheard a competitor’s coach saying how confident he was that they would get us this year. That lit a fire with this team and made everything click. This team really came together, and they realized that winning is the standard.”
In addition to being a part of two first-place relays, junior Sarah Chichester won the 200 and the 400-meter dash, to give her four gold medals on the day.
Chichester was also part of the winning girls 4×400 relay, along with Woodring, junior Braeleigh Flick, and Lehman. This relay will also be going to states.
“Sarah Chichester won all four of her events, which is absolutely amazing. We moved her events around this year, and it really paid off in a big way,” Kanuch said.
On the boys side, Tyrone was led by junior Mason Emigh with a pair of second-place finishes and state-qualifying jumps in the triple and long jumps.
Junior Drew Irons will also be going to states in the 300m hurdles. He finished fourth but his time of 40.38 met the state standard.
With so many great performances to choose from, Kanush was hesitant to name anyone as a standout, but when pressed, he highlighted Nicole Ramsey’s fourth-place finish and state qualifying distance in the triple jump.
“This year was not all rainbows and butterflies [for Nicole],” Kanuch said, “it took a lot of hard work and determination to get her to qualify this year. Her resiliency and positivity yesterday are what make her such a great competitor.”
Ramsey said she was a little nervous before the meet, but in the end, she was able to come up with her best performance of the season on her last jump at districts to qualify for states for the third year in a row.
“Going into districts, I had very little confidence in myself. In April, I got sick for three weeks, and I couldn’t get back,” Ramsey said. “My season’s best was a 34-1 and the state qualifying distance is 35-6. It took until the third jump that I was able to jump the 35-6. I’m still so shocked that I was able to make it to the state meet for triple jump for the third year in a row, and I couldn’t be more proud of myself for getting over that mind block and jumping well when it counted.”
Kanuch also mentioned a couple of athletes who don’t usually make headlines but had great individual performances at the Championship meet.
“A couple of other kids who you don’t normally hear about that had great days were Levi Wrye in the 1600 and Zach Silva in the discus. They both had big PR’s,” Kanush said.
Kanush also singled out Claire Lehman’s day as a standout performance. “Claire won three of her events and dominated the field in the 300 hurdles like she has all season,” Kanuch said.
Seeding for States
Going into the PIAA Track and Field State Championships this weekend, Tyrone’s top-seeded performers include junior Mason Emigh, senior Claire Lehman, junior Sarah Chichester, and the girls’ 1600-meter relay.
In the field, Emigh’s distances that he jumped at districts are showing high hopes of receiving state medals both Friday and Saturday. In the triple jump, he is seeded third, and in the long jump, he is seeded fourth.
After Lehman’s consistency of bringing down her time meet after meet this season, she is seeded sixth going into the state championship meet.
Chichester is seated ninth in the 400-meter dash and will have a shot at making the finals with a good time in prelims.
Since the running conditions were not ideal on Wednesday, the relay didn’t run their best time, but they are still seeded tenth. If the girls are able to run their best time, they could get fourth.
Boys
The boys had two solid days and a spot at states with relay teams and individual events, giving it their all. As a team, they finished fourth out of 27 teams.
Junior Mason Emigh paved his way to states in two events, the triple jump and the long jump. In the long jump, Emigh jumped 22-4.75 for a second-place finish. In the triple jump, he jumped a 45-11, taking second once again.
Junior Drew Irons qualified for the state championship in the 300m hurdles with a time of 40.38, picking up a 4th place finish on the podium as well. Junior Tyler Connelly placed eighth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 44.34.
“I’m really happy with my performance in the 300 hurdles this year, and I’m looking forward to states,” Irons said.
Irons also showed out in the 200m dash with a time of 23.1, placing fourth, just one spot out of the state qualifiers.
Freshman Brenson Davis capped off an exceptional first season by placing sixth in the 3200-meter run with a 10:21.81.
Kyler Suhoney took 5th in the 110m hurdles with a time of 16.01, with one of his best times of the year.
Junior Jesse Parks also had a good meet, making the podium with an eighth-place finish in the 400 with a time of 54.97.
GIRLS
The Lady Eagles had a great two days at districts, with the 4x100m team headlining the meet by extending their seven-year winning streak.
As a team, the girls finished in fifth place of 26 teams competing.
In the 100m dash, Lehman placed sixth with a time of 13.19, with freshman Raylee Woodring in seventh with a time of 13.21.
Chichester won the 200m dash with a time of 25.97. She will be attending the state championship for her win and her time.
In the 300m hurdles, Lehman won with a time of 46.16. She will be attending the state championship for her win and her time.
Chichester, in the 400m dash, won with a time of 58.67. She will be attending the state championship for her win and her time.
In the 4x100m relay, Tyrone won with a time of 50.32. The team members include Lehman, Ramsey, Woodring, and Chichester. They will be attending the state championship for their win and time.
In the 4x400m relay, Tyrone won with a time of 4:06.53. The team members include Chichester, Woodring, junior Braeleigh Flick, and Lehman. They will be attending the state championship for their win and time.
In the 4x800m relay, Tyrone earned seventh with a time of 10:52.83. The team members include freshman Hallie Troutman, freshman Ella Savino, freshman Addison Davis, and sophomore Kiana Gardner.
In the high jump, sophomore Lola Woomer placed fourth with a jump of 5’0”.
In the triple jump, Ramsey earned fourth with a jump of 35’6”. She will be attending the state championship for her distance.
In the pole vault, senior Addison Warren placed seventh with a vault of 8’0”.
“I’m super happy that I was able to place on the podium my senior year,” Warren said. “Coming into this meet, I wanted to place above what I did my sophomore year, and I achieved just that. I was so dedicated to making the podium in the pole vault that I purposefully pulled myself out of the 100M hurdles, despite qualifying for districts with them. Getting to end my senior year off with placing seventh is just an amazing feeling.”
In the shot put, junior Josie Dicken earned eighth with a throw of 32’3”, and placed eighth in discus with a throw of 97 ’10”.
“It feels great to finally place in the top eight at districts. I’ve been going [to districts] since freshman year, and I’m very thankful for my abilities to be able to place. I think next year I will be able to place higher, with the experience I gain from next season,” Dicken said.
In the javelin, sophomore Genna Naylor earned sixth with a throw of 107’1”.
“With this being my first year, I didn’t have high expectations going into the season, but I slowly progressed. I am a little disappointed in my performance at districts, but very grateful for my team and the opportunities I had this season,” Naylor said.
