Earlier today a van of promising young Tyrone athletes left the TAHS parking lot, headed for Shippensburg and the State Track Meet that will take place tomorrow and Saturday.

Heading that fine crop of athletes was defending high jump state champion Erika Voyzey. Voyzey is the number one seed going into the weekend so one would assume pressure would be at an all time high.

She would disagree.

“I’m just excited to be there again,” said Voyzey earlier today, “Last year was great, but this time it’s different. I’m going to go in and focus on having fun and doing what I love most. There’s really no pressure at all.”

Impressive demeanor exuberated by the defending champ; one can only hope that attitude can radiate among the rest of her teammates as they prepare for the biggest meet of their lives.

“As we pack 10 amazing athletes into an undersized, states-bound school van this morning, a lot of thoughts and reminiscences are sure to flit through our minds, but with our sitting so close over this two-hour journey, as teammates who have been through so much together this season, the sweat, the shivering, the breathlessness of broken records, even the undefeated season, one solemn question rises to the top: if someone farts, will the power windows work? Remember, my friend, track is too important to be taken seriously.  Let the games begin,” said Everhart.

Voyzey will be joined by Garrett Hunter in the javelin, Cullen Raftery in triple jump and Nick Getz in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Getz also is a member of the 4×100 dash team along with Cameron Bakhsheshe, Conner Harper and Parker Mitchell, who will also be making the trip.

While every member of the team heading to states is not seeded highly in their events, optimism is at an all time high.

“My event is pretty crowded, it won’t be easy to make headway,” said Raftery, “but I know if I jump my best I can make an impact and gain experience for next season.”

On behalf of not only the Eagle Eye staff but the student body as a whole, we wish the entire team best of luck at states this weekend.
