Tyrone Wrestling Wins Backyard Brawl

Tyrone head coach Terry Tate knew that their dual meet against arch rival Bellwood would be close.  Both teams are small but evenly matched.  What he didn’t know was that a losing bout late in the match would be a catalyst for his team’s victory.

Junior Brandon Ixtepan didn’t win against Bellwood standout senior Derrick Noonan, but by wrestling hard and avoiding the tech fall, he helped his team beat the Blue Devils by 36-25.

“There were numerous wrestlers that stood out, but Brandon Ixtepan’s match was one that really gave us the edge. He went out against Bellwood’s best wrestler and went at him for six straight minutes and gave him all he could handle. That effort is what won the match for us,” said Tate.

“I’m not sure Alex Weaver understood the weight I placed on him for the match but if he did, he handled it like a veteran. That’s encouraging when I know I have him and 3 other tough freshmen to build a team around for the next 3 years
