Tyrone Varsity Softball will start the 2017 season with a new head coach.  Mr. Doug Myers of Phillipsburg, comes to the position with 27 years of coaching experience.

Myers began as a little league coach in 1990 and has coached girls varsity basketball for 10 years at P.O. and West Branch.

He has also coached softball for the past 12 years for the Hurricanes 18u summer team. Most recently Myers has been the varsity assistant softball coach at Philipsburg-Osceola for the past seven years.

Myers and his new staff are looking forward to the upcoming season.

“Our philosophy will be to understand that [the girls] are student-athletes and student is first and foremost. We will strive to achieve excellence both in the classroom and on the field. Hard work will be the foundation to our success. We will challenge, encourage, and work with our athletes to build a program that they can be proud of,” said Myers.

Myers hopes to build a strong foundation by bringing the softball team back to basic fundamentals.

“Most teams that are successful are really fundamentally sound teams. We want the girls to know the small details for the drill or exercise they may be doing so we want to be focused on the details of every part of the game. We need to be confident and believe that we can win. I want the girls to learn how to build great team chemistry and to know how to be good teammates,” said Myers.

Myers also looks to build a winning atmosphere and mind set.

This is going to be a big year for the coaches to do a lot of teaching and for the girls to do a lot of learning.

“We want to be competitive in our league. Our league is very strong, so we need to start there. This is going to be a big year for the coaches to do a lot of teaching and for the girls to do a lot of learning. We want to get as many girls playing in the games as we can to gain valuable experience for the future. Our number one goal is to see the girls play to their maximum effort and to not hold back because of fear of failure or intimidation,” said head coach Myers.

Meyers will be assisted by Tony Vallalla.  The JV coach is not yet been determined. The junior high head coach will be Tim Shaw.
