Tyrone Qualifies Two for States

Braden Ewing and Kyle Scott will represent the Golden Eagles this weekend in Hershey

Tyrone had a successful Regional Wrestling Championship last weekend in Altoona, advancing two wrestlers to the PIAA AA State Wrestling Tournament this weekend in Hershey.

Senior Braden Ewing finished third and sophomore Kyle Scott finished fifth to punch their tickets to Hershey. Tyrone’s Remington Fleck also reached the podium, finishing eighth, just one win shy of qualifying for states.

Ewing was the second seed at Regionals after winning his first district title two weeks ago. Ewing took on the 15th seed in the round of 16 where he collected a fall in 2:45. Ewing advanced to the quarter-finals where he had a familiar opponent, Joey Baronick from Burgettstown.

I felt like I ended the year off really well and think that placing at regionals is a big accomplishment. I just ran into a tough opponent to make it to states

— Remington Fleck

The match started slow as it was scoreless till the second period where Baronick escaped, Ewing matched Baronick by escaping in the third to tie the score 1-1. Going into overtime, the crowd was loud. Burgettown fans and Tyrone fans are having a who could cheer louder match of their own.

Ewing used the chirping as motivation as he took down Baronick in overtime to advance to the semi-finals.

Ewing locked in his trip to Hershey and had high spirits, facing 6th seed, Dylan Pitzer in the next round.

Ewing was up 2-1 after the first, capturing a takedown in the first. Choosing bottom, Pitzer’s top ride was too tough for Ewing as he got rode out for the 2nd period. Pitzer went bottom in the third and reversed Ewing to go up 3-2. Pitzer rode out Ewing to win 3-2.

Ewing dropped down and won via major decision and advanced to the third-place bout, where he took on Joey Baronick once again. The match was a nail-biter again as it went into Ultimate Ride out tied 1-1. Ewing got first choice and escaped quickly to win the match and take third place.

Scott was Tyrone’s other state qualifier as he took 5th place.

Scott came out of the gate hot and easily advanced to the semi-finals. On the way, he collected a major decision and a fall in the quarters. Scott faced a tough opponent in the semis, Elijah Brown from Belle Vernon.

The first period was spent hand-fighting with both wrestlers looking for a takedown. 0-0 going into the second, Brown took down and escaped after 18 seconds of Scott’s ride. Scott went down in the third period, hoping to escape and tie the match, but Brown’s offense was too good and collected 3 near falls on Scott and rode him out. Scott lost 4-0 and dropped to the consi-semis.

Scott faced his #1 opponent, Owen McMullen of Bishop McCort. This match was a favorite for the crowd as it’s always a gut-wrenching battle between the two. Scott lost 4-2 but is closing the gap quickly on McMullen. McMullen achieved victory via decision.

Scott dropped to the 5th place match where he won 3-1 against Glendale Goerge Campbell. Kyle took 5th place and moved on to states.

Andrew Weaver had a tough draw coming 4th out of Districts. Weaver faced Bentworth’s Vitayl Daniels. Daniels and Weaver faced off at Ultimate Warrior where Daniels won 9-0. Weaver fell by an 8-2 decision to Daniels and dropped down to the consolation bracket.

Weaver knew it would be a tough fight back, but knew it was possible. Weaver got two wins in the fight back into contention but was stopped by Jacob Layhue from Beth Center.

Weaver lost 8-2, putting an end to his senior season and high school wrestling career. Weaver collected 39 wins this year and only 10 losses and his final career record was 103 wins and 43 losses.

Remington Fleck continued his underdog journey. Similar to Districts, Fleck lost his first match by a 4-0 decision, but Fleck won his first match in the consolation bracket 7-5 and moved on to a familiar opponent, Jacob Wilson of Central Cambria.

Wilson beat Fleck in sudden victory twice this year already. Fleck knew it was going to be a tough match. Down 1-0 going into the third, Fleck had to get to work and collected a reversal, but Wilson escaped sending the match into Sudden Victory. Fleck swiftly took Wilson down to finally get his back.

Moving on to the round of Consi of 8 #2, Fleck had another nail-biting match where he took another win via decision. Fleck made it into the blood rounds as the 16th seed of the tournament, where he fell to Ezra Swisher of Bellefonte by Fall. Fleck took 8th place and was just one match away from moving on.

Fleck posted a 26-19 record and became a Southwest Regionals Qualifier for the first time in his wrestling career.

As a team, Tyrone finished 14th with 40 points.
