Tyrone Borough Council Talks Bridge Repairs; Discusses Speed Limit Changes

The main topic of discussion at the most recent October meeting of the Tyrone Borough Council was the future of the currently closed 9th Street Pedestrian Bridge.

A $500,000 estimate was made on the price to repair and upkeep the bridge.

Councilmen Charles Mills and Terry Richardson argued that those costs were far too high, with Mills saying that the steel underneath the bridge is, “Perfect.”

Another argument made about the 9th Street bridge was that the Army Corps of Engineers issued a statement saying that the Flood Plain in Tyrone would be reduced if the bridge’s pillars were to be deconstructed.

“That bridge has nothing to do with the floodplain, it’s what’s growing in the creek,” said Councilman Charles Mills.

Another issue tackled at the council’s meeting is to bring the speed limit down on Lincoln and Blair avenue from 25 miles per hour to 15 miles per hour.

“[We will] entertain the thought of doing traffic studies to lower the speed limit from 25 to 15,” said Councilman David Snyder.

“It needs to be reduced, there’s no if’s, and’s, or but’s about it,” said Richardson.

“We need the manpower to enforce,” said Mayor Bill Latchford, “I love this because I think it is important.”

More rules were adopted for Reservoir Park as well. For senior fishers, fish under 10” must be released, no more than three fish are allowed to be kept at a time.

Mayor Latchford was pleased with the new 7:00 am to 7:00 pm hours at Reservoir Park.  “5-6 tables are in use at all times,” said Latchford.

The final topic for discussion was the possibility of a basketball court, memorial park, or skating rink at the Lincoln School property.

Council also set the dates and times of the following community events:

  • Trick or Treat on Thursday, October 26th.
  • Halloween Parade will be held on October 28th at 4 pm.
  • Veterans Day parade is November 11th at 4pm.
