Late Push Not Enough to Knock Off Lady Eagles

The Tyrone Lady Eagle basketball team defeated Tussey Mountain by a score of 49-43 Saturday afternoon behind a perfect combination of a strong first half offense and lockdown defensive performance in the second.

The Lady Eagles had three starters reach double digits. Sophomore Jaida Parker led all scorers with 16 points. Sophomore Emma Getz added 11 and junior Shannon Shaw had 10.

We have to go one game at a time, our next game is Central, they are a very good team a very disciplined, team and that is what our focus is on right now

— Head Coach Luke Rhoades

Tyrone’s victory was fueled by the lead they jumped out to in the first and second quarters. Tyrone came out to an early 7 point, 13-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter showcased a bit more offense with both teams doubling their totals from the first. The first half ended with Tyrone extending their slim first-quarter lead to  34-18.

After the strong first half, Tyrone had a chance to pull away in the third but Tussey Mountain’s defense snuffed out almost every Tyrone scoring chance allowing their offense to begin the climb back into the game. Even after the slow quarter Tyrone still led 39-25.

Tussey’s offense caught up with their defense in the fourth quarter cutting down the Golden Eagle lead with every possession.  Tussey’s defense held Tyrone silent for the majority of the quarter until Shannon Shaw knocked down a huge three relighting the Tyrone offense.

“We have to go one game at a time, our next game is Central, they are a very good team a very disciplined, team and that is what our focus is on right now,” said Head Coach Luke Rhoades.

Tyrone’s defense preserved the lead down the stretch just long enough for their offense to extend their lead and keep the ball away from the Tussey offense.  With the victory, Tyrone moves to 8-2 on the season. They look to stay perfect in the Mountain League when they travel to Central on Tuesday.
