The Central PA Humane Society Needs You

The Central PA Humane Society shelter in Altoona is a “no kill” shelter, meaning that the shelter does not euthanize healthy or treatable animals, even when the shelter is full.

They are always looking for volunteers and donations.  Board Secretary Sue Bryan talked to the Eagle Eye about what they do and how people can help.

Eagle Eye: How many animals are currently at the Humane Society?

Sue Bryan: “We have 200 kittens/cats on site and 100 kittens/cats in foster care. We also have 48 dogs on site 23 in foster care, due to being no kill.”

EE: What kind of animals do you have available to adopt?

SB: “Domestic short hair cats, long hair cats, Himalayans. Mix breed dogs, Pit Bulls, Chihuahua, Beagles, Labs, Huskies, Boxers, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Pugs.  Other animals include rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, chinchillas, pot belly pigs, and gerbils.” To see a list of all the animals currently available for adoption, click HERE.

EE: What can a volunteer do?

SB:  “Whether you are interested in walking dogs, helping at events, or socializing cats, there is a place for you . Many jobs, like clean the large kennels, small kennels and laundry and newspapers.”  For a full list of volunteer opportunities click HERE.

EE: Why is it good to volunteer?

SB: “It reduces our costs, it helps socialize the animals and gets extra jobs done.”

EE: What events do you have throughout the year?

SB: “Chilifest, Paws In The Park, and Pints For Pets and Boots, Bull, Brews, Fur-ball, Bickers for Barkers, and Pet Expo and Holiday Campaigns, Human Society Memberships.”  For a full list of events and fundraising activities, click HERE.

SB: “Our business hours are Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, & Saturday: 12:30 pm- 4:30 pm and Friday: 12:30 pm – 7:00 pm”
