Sports awards in the gym lobby get an update

Long neglected student-athlete award plaques in the gym lobby have been updated.

Trivia questionOther than working in the Tyrone Area School District, what do Mr. Steve Everhart, Mr. Marcus Owens, Mr. Luke Rhoades, Mrs. Beth Cannistraci, and Mr. James Coleman all have in common?

AnswerTheir names are all enshrined in the high school gymnasium lobby on plaques honoring Tyrone’s best student-athletes.

But walking through the lobby, many students and visitors have noticed that these plaques haven’t been updated in years.

According to TASD Athletic Director Luke Rhoades, they had not been updated since 2003.

“The plaques were installed two athletic directors ago and it was just an oversight that they had not been updated,” said Rhoades.

This year he decided to add the names from the past decade to the plaques in order to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our student-athletes.

The two most important awards on display in the lobby are the Wilson Award,  given annually to the outstanding male student-athlete in the senior class and the Levine Award, given annually to the outstanding female student-athlete in the senior class.

The other awards on display are given annually to seniors in various varsity sports.

“The awards are all up to date now and we will be able to keep it up to date permanently,” said Rhoades, “we encourage students and visitors to stop and take a look.”
