Local Amusement Park Offers Employment for High Schoolers

DelGrosso’s Park and Laguna Splash is a great place for teenagers to work over the summer to gain valuable workplace skills in a safe and fun environment.

As the school year is coming to an end, high school students are beginning to plan for the upcoming summer as many start to apply for their very first summer job. Many students from Tyrone and surrounding areas have already made a plan to spend their summer making memories while also gaining a profit and valuable workplace experience.

A popular place for high school students to gain work experience is DelGrosso’s Park and Laguna Splash located in Tipton, Pennsylvania. Every year, DelGrosso’s hires high school and college students throughout the community to teach them valuable workplace skills in a safe and fun environment.

A hidden treasure for many students which is so often taken advantage of, DelGrosso’s is only a small drive away from Tyrone and is still hiring for the upcoming season.

DelGrosso’s Park hires as young as 14 and 15 years old at a starting pay of $7.50. Students as young as 15 years of age may apply and work as a shallow water lifeguard, earning as much as $12.50 an hour. Applicants 16 years or older can earn $14.00 an hour as a deep water or special facilities lifeguard. Lifeguards are required to go through required park training to earn their Ellis & Associates Lifeguard Certification before starting at the Laguna Splash Waterpark.

“I decided to work at DelGrossos because it was a really good chance to make some money and work with friends. The effect it has on me is that now I know very important skills and I can do something for the community. This is my second year working [at the park] and I decided to return to make some nice money for college,” said senior and second-year lifeguard Elizabeth Pearson.

Currently, there is a push to recruit and hire ride operators for the upcoming season. In response to the demand for ride operators, the starting hourly rate was recently raised to $12.50 an hour. Park management also implemented an incentive opportunity for operators to earn a bonus of $50 if they work six consecutive shifts.

In order to become a ride operator, applicants must be 16 years of age at the time of application. The rides team at DelGrosso’s Park interacts with guests in one on one interactions throughout the season. Becoming a ride operator will teach one how to work with others, interact with guests, perform daily tasks in a safe manner, and gain workplace experience.

“I needed a summer job. To be fair, I really did not want one at first, but it was after my mom applied for me and I started working that I realized how neat it was to operate rides. But what really makes me love the job more than anything else is the people I get to meet every year,” said Tyrone Class of 2019 graduate, Caden Brooks. “This is my fifth year (third in management position). I continue to return because, again, of the people I get to meet, but I also feel like a reliable part of the team because my voice gets heard and my decisions are respected.”

“I decided to work at DelGrosso’s because I needed a job that was close to home, and I heard some great things about the rides department. The friendly coworkers are the reason I come back every year. Not just in the rides department but in all areas of the park. After you work there for a while, you build connections with people who work in games, food, security, etc.” said Tyrone Class of 2020 graduate Jessica Chronister.

Those interested in joining the Food Department are also encouraged to apply for an open position. The Food Department is actively seeking team members to join the food stands and catering teams. As park management and any team member will tell you, previous work experience is not required. Each department provides their own training to help each team member find success in their role.

“I started working there in order to gain knowledge on the intricacies of holding down a job and to start making my own income. This experience helped prepare me in order to find other employment opportunities further down the road,” said senior and third-year returning food service employee Jace McCartney.

“I had a friend convince me to apply there with them once I told them I was looking for a job and I ended up making a bunch of new friends and it made my time management better making plans around my work schedule,” said senior and second year returning food service employee Samantha Molnar.
