Lady Eagles Lose Heartbreaker to BG Lady Marauders

The Lady Eagles battled back from a 21-point deficit but ended up taking a tough 45-43 loss against the Lady Marauders of Bishop Guilfoyle on Saturday.
The game was played on the historic hardwood of the Jaffa in Altoona.

Tyrone scored the first 4 points of the game, but the Lady Marauders went on a run, hitting shots from the outside and Tyrone found itself down 25-4 by the midway point of the 2nd quarter.

But Tyrone refused to give up, scoring the final 10 points of the half after back-to-back 3s from Tyrone freshmen Alayna Woomer and Rylan Crowell.

I don’t know where our heads were at defensively early in the game, but we were not in it. We were not playing defense. They were executing their offense and hitting open shots, but they were open because we weren’t playing defense

— Luke Rhoades

Tyrone was able to reduce the BG lead to just 7 points going into halftime.

According to Tyrone Head Coach Luke Rhoades, the lack of defense early on was a big problem for the Lady Eagles. Once they started to focus on the defensive end of the court, the game turned.

“I don’t know where our heads were at defensively early in the game, but we were not in it. We were not playing defense. They were executing their offense and hitting open shots, but they were open because we weren’t playing defense,” said Tyrone Head Coach Luke Rhoades.

Coming back from the half, the Lady Eagles scored the first 7 points to tie the game 30.

Late in the 4th quarter, the Lady Eagles were down by a few possessions when Tyrone senior Kayelin Gibbons, the high scorer for Tyrone with 22, made a couple of clutch free throws that brought Tyrone within 2 points with 10 seconds left.

After forcing a turnover with a little over 3 seconds left, Tyrone had possession but less than four seconds to take the ball the length of the court for a game-winning shot.

Rhoades called a timeout and drew up a play. After the inbound, the Lady Eagles took too much time to get the ball up the court leading to the time expiring and the game ending with a 43-45 loss.

“That was not the play we drew up,” said Rhoades, who was disappointed that the Lady Eagles were not even able to get a final shot before the clock expired.

This loss moved the Lady Eagles to 8-7 on the year.
