Boys Place 2nd at Bedford Invitational; Voyzey Breaks Another Record

Saturday’s Bedford Invitational was another bright spot in what has been a phenomenal season so far for the Golden Eagle track team. The Boy’s squad placed 2nd overall in a field of 14 teams. Jake Meredith and Adam Zook led the effort for the Golden Eagles, placing first in the high jump (5’10”) and the 800 meter (2:04) respectively.

“You couldn’t have asked for better conditions to run in,” said Zook following his winning performance, “I felt really good coming into today and I’m happy to that translate onto the track. This was the first meet we’ve had in good weather; you can’t let good opportunities like this one pass you by.”

Parker Mitchell placed 6th in the 100 meter, 3rd in the 200 meter and leaped to another 3rd place finish in the long jump. His time of 23.2 in the 200 was a new personal best.

All the credit goes to my amazing coaches. Coach Shedd and Wally have been so helpful in allowing me to perform at my best. You wouldn’t trade mentors like that for the world

— Senior Cullen Raftery

Speaking of personal bests, Cullen Raftery had a day to remember. He placed in all four events that he competed in: 5th in long jump, 3rd in pole vault, and new best jump of 42′ in the triple jump garnered him a 2nd place finish. He was joined by Zook, Michael Lewis (who took 4th in the long jump) and Will Lash (a 5th place finisher in the 300 meter hurdles) on the 1600 meter relay team that placed 3rd.

Raftery was appreciative after the meet, “All the credit goes to my amazing coaches. Coach Shedd and Wally have been so helpful in allowing me to perform at my best. You wouldn’t trade mentors like that for the world.”

The dynamic duo of Joe and Zach Kohler placed 3rd and 5th in the 3200 meter respectively. J. Kohler also took 3rd in the 1600 meter with a new best time of 4:43. The scoring for the boys was rounded out by throwers Nick Bonsell and Jeff McNelis. Bonsell took 5th in shot-put and 6th in discus while McNelis finished 5th in discus and 6th in shot-put.

Although the girl’s team placed 9th out of 18 teams, solid individual performances give them a lot to build off of moving forward. Erika Voyzey led the way with yet another “herculean” performance. Aside from taking 5th in the 100 meter and 6th in the 200 meter, Voyzey set a new meet record with an impressive jump of 5’8″ in the high jump.  She was also named the meet’s Outstanding Female Jumper.

“It was nice to finally be able to compete in warm weather,” said Voyzey, “that definitely contributed to everyone doing their best today.”

Voyzey was joined by MaKenzie Stauffer (also placed 6th in the 100 meter hurdles with a new best time of 17.2), Tori Crabtree and Lea Crofcheck on the 400 meter relay team that placed 5th. The 1600 meter relay team also took 5th and was composed of Crabtree, Emily Beam, Kristen Johnson and Payton Wagner. They shaved a whole 12 seconds off their best time and ended the meet on a high note.

The week ahead features a home meet against Bellefonte and Huntingdon and the Shippensburg Invitational on Saturday.
