After a fourth-place finish at the state tournament last year, Kyle Scott opened his senior year with a dominant 19-2 technical fall win, but that didn’t stop the Bedford Bison from taking the Golden Eagles down 42-29 in both teams’ season opener.
“It was great to start the year like that, but obviously, it is going to be a long season. I’m eyeing up bigger and better things, like a district and state championship,” Scott said.
In addition to Scott, Tyrone’s Mason Van Allmen, Jonah Wicker, Coltyn Frye, and John Eaken all won their bouts.
Tyrone started the match strong with Tanner Walk winning by forfeit and Jonah Wicker winning over Bedford’s Emrick 17-2 to give the Golden Eagles an early lead, but Bedford responded by winning the next three matches at 121, 127, and 133 lbs.
Colton Frye put on a dominant performance at 139, scoring 19 points on his opponent to secure the major decision victory, but Bedford secured the next three matches with pins at 145, 152, and 160.
Mason VanAllman pinned his opponent in 1:37, and Kyle Scott followed that up with a technical fall win.
With just two matches left, the Golden Eagles’ chances were slim, and with another loss at 215, the Bison secured the victory, but John Eaken ended the night strong for Tyrone with a 6-4 decision victory.
The Golden Eagles will compete next at the Darren Klingerman Invitational at Bloomsburg on Friday.
