The Tyrone Golden Eagles boys and girls swim teams participated in the LHAC Championship at Hollidaysburg High School pool last Friday.

Unlike a dual meet against one opponent, this was a championship meet featuring all teams from the Laurel Highlands Conference.

Swimmers were seeded by their times, giving many of the swimmers close competition and the chance to prepare for the competition they will face at Districts.

BOYS:

On the boys’ side, Matthew Eckenrode was Tyrone’s top finisher, coming in third in the 500 freestyle.

Eckenrode broke what was the previous meet record with a time of 5:16.57. However, both the champion Cullen Miller (4:59.93) of Westmont Hilltop and runner-up Jack Wolfe (5:06.41) of Penns Valley, also broke the meet record.

Eckenrode also swam the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:58.11, placing fourth.

Owen Dunklebarger placed sixth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:23.58 and seventh in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:00.56.

Lucas Bonsell finished right behind Dunklebarger in eighth place in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:00.72. Bonsell also placed fourth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:05.99.

Cameron Nelson placed seventh in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:11.46.

The Golden Eagles also placed in every relay – finishing fifth in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:45.19, sixth in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:45.09, and seventh in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:56.03.

GIRLS:

Emma Bonsell was the only individual Lady Eagle to place in the top eight. Bonsell placed seventh in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:20.78.

In the relays, the Lady Eagles placed seventh in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:59.85 and eighth in the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:23.9.

The LHAC Championship gave the Golden Eagles a glimpse into what to expect at Districts.

The District 6 championships will be held a month from now at the PSU Natatorium in State College on Feb. 20-21.

Until then, they will have three more dual meets. The next is against Penn Valley on Jan. 26th, which will also be Senior Night.
