Tyrone grapplers take 3rd at Conemaugh Township Tournament

Despite having barely half a full team, Tyrone’s wrestlers came through with a 3rd place title at the 48th Annual Conemaugh Township Holiday Wrestling Tournament out of eight teams.

Westmont Hilltop placed first and North Star was second.

“We knew what we needed to do. We didn’t have the people we thought we would have but we made it work. Hopefully the players who say they will come out will. If that happens, we could be unstoppable,” said sophomore Jamal Hicks.

Tyrone finished with 75 points at the tournament and each wrestler placed and had at least one win.

Junior Stevie Coyler took first with 4-0. “I took second last year, so I wanted to come out and win this time. This is also a great way for me to start off the season,” said Coyler.

Juniors Sage Dixon and Devon Brown won all their matches and took first place with 5-0 and 3-0 records.

“I kept getting 3rd the past few years. This time I wanted to go out and prove myself,” said Dixon.

“It was a good day. We learned a lot from our wins and losses,” Coach Michael Cherry.

Taking second place were juniors Mike Cherry and Gage Light who went 1-1.

Sophomore Derrick Harris went 3-2 and placed third.

“I went out there and did my best. That’s all I could ever ask of myself,” said Harris.

Senior Phoenix Farias went 3-2, and Jamal Hicks went 1-2,  each taking 3rd place.

The team travels to Huntingdon on Tuesday and to Altoona on Thursday, start time for the Jr. High is 5:00 and 7:00 for the varsity.
