Tyrone Stuffs the Bearcats in D6 Playoffs

Senior David Lang connects on one of his 5 three pointers. Lang finished with 15 points.

Tyrone’s seniors walked off their home court for the last time in their high school careers as winners Monday as the Tyrone Golden Eagles easily took care of the Huntington Bearcats 71-43 in the opening round of the PIAA District VI playoffs.

In the next round, the Eagles will face the Penn Cambria Panthers in their home gym on  Saturday at 1.

Senior Landen DeHaas led all scorers with 25 points, while David Lang added 15, all on shots from beyond the arc, and Ross Gampe added 12 in the paint.

The game was close in the opening quarter as both teams struggled to hit early shots, but Tyrone came out with a 12-11 lead.

But the Eagles put on a defensive clinic in the second quarter, holding the Bearcats scoreless for the entire quarter while scoring 14.

Ross Gampe sparked Tyrone with 6 straight points in the second to begin Tyrones’ massive run.

Coming into this game, there was a lot of pressure on the seniors because of last year’s playoff expectations being cut short. This Tyrone team was supposed to be underdogs coming into the season, but so far they have surpassed those expectations.

The Eagles earned a share of the Mountain League title and now have a district playoff victory under their belt. With one more win, the Eagles will punch their ticket to the state tournament and the district title game.
