Tyrone Quiz League Breaks Records

At 6-5 the Tyrone team is much improved this season

Historically Tyrone has been somewhat of a doormat in the Scholastic Quiz League world.  Usually after an 11 match season, the Tyrone squad would be lucky to have won two of them.

However, with a revamped roster and a rejuvenated attitude, Tyrone has already posted a record of 6-5.  That’s better than the total number of wins they secured in the past two seasons combined, with three matches still remaining in the season.

“I am so impressed with how competitive the team has been thus far,” said Quiz League Coach Mike Funicelli, “Led by captain Chloe, we have shown an increased strength and agility in our buzzer pushing, as well as a mental endurance that is unparalleled.”

For the first time in school history the team beat perennial powerhouse Northern Bedford and took two other historically strong teams, Bishop Guilfoyle and Bedford down to the wire. In fact, Tyrone only lost to Bedford by one question in a “sudden death” overtime period.

Other teams have taken note of Tyrone’s new found success as well.

“Several other coaches have commented to Coach Wilson and I about how our team is now a threat, whereas in recent years were considered an ‘easy win.’ This, to me, is the ultimate compliment” said Funicelli.

With the team’s foundation being comprised of mostly underclassmen, Tyrone should be a force to be reckoned with in coming years. An elusive playoff berth to the most intense tournament a high school (m)athlete could ever experience may not be out of reach as the team continues to grow.

Coached by Mr. Michael Funicelli and Mr. Ron Wilson, the members of this year’s team include Seniors Haley Butina, Paige Umholtz, and Kendall Gardner, Juniors Molly Harris, Rachel Robison, Levi Walk, Joe Kohler, Abby Hagen, Chloe Makdad, Zac Jamison, and Grayson Putt and Sophomore Curtis Brennaman.

While their primary purpose when attending matches is responding to questions ranging from quantum physics to historic literature to dirty Pennsylvania bird species and more, it’s also worth noting that this year’s team has developed quite the “selfie-game.” Click through the slide show above to see their pre and post-match pictures.

Their final three matches with Tussey Mountain, Everett, and Altoona would have surely been losses in previous years, but Tyrone is looking to show once again that they are no longer a joke.

While it will be no easy task, don’t be surprised if the team walks away with three more wins.
