Tyrone Knocks Off Bald Eagle in D6 Quarterfinals

The Golden Eagles are moving on to the D6 semifinals after a big 53-37 win against Bald Eagle Area on Monday, Febraury 27.

Both teams had a 13-9 record coming into this game and they split two regular season games earlier on in the year, so it was anyone’s guess who would win the game and punch their ticket to the semifinals.

The last time these two teams matched up, Tyrone lost by just one point in an overtime battle.  But this time it was all Tyrone from the opening tip to the final buzzer.

“We pushed the pace more, played faster, and played better defense,” said sophomore Andrew Escala.

Senior forward Ross Gampe scored six points and senior guard Zac LeGars added five in the first quarter, add to that a stout Tyrone defense, and Tyrone was able to go on a 15-2 run to grab a big lead and set the tone of the game early.

“It felt really good to win a playoff game at home and give us a chance to reach our goal of winning the district championship,” said sophomore Ashton Walk.

Tyrone sophomore Andrew Escala led the game in scoring with 16, and gave Tyrone a couple of crucial buckets at the end of the game that sealed the deal.

The Eagles will play Tuesday top-seeded Bishop Guilfoyle on Tuesday in Altoona.

“They are 23-3 and are projected to go super deep in the playoffs, so beating them would be huge,” said sophomore Ashton Walk.
