On Wednesday, March 27, 2024 TAHS students will descend on the Tyrone community for a spring clean up day.

Community service and fun will be the focus for Tyrone Area High School students on March 27, 2024.

Ninth through 12th-grade students will participate in community service clean-up projects in the morning, and then celebrate with the annual Spring Fling in the afternoon.

“It is our intent to teach our student body the importance of volunteerism and helping their community. Beginning this year our graduation policy now requires students to volunteer 15 hours of community service before graduation. This program can be used to meet this requirement,” said Cummins McNitt, TAHS social studies teacher and the chairperson of the Community Service Day event.

The annual Community Service Day dates back to 2016 and has been held every spring except in 2020 and 2021 when it was canceled due to COVID-19.

Ninth-grade students will clean up around the Tyrone Area School District campus, while students in grades 10-12 will spread out into the community to do various clean-up projects.

Tyrone High School teachers and staff will provide supervision for the students.

Clean-up locations include Reservoir Park, the borough roller hockey rink, City Hotel Park, First Responders Park, Railroad Park, Park Avenue Park, the Municipal Building, and Grandview Cemetary.

Projects include sweeping sidewalks, litter pickup, leaf collection, cemetery cleanup, spreading mulch at Reservoir and Park Avenue parks, cleaning borough police cars, and cleanup in the downtown area.

Students should wear appropriate clothing and shoes as they could get dirty. Students and teachers will receive a vest, gloves, trash bags, and tools.

Students should monitor the weather and plan accordingly. In the event of rain, the high school will have a normal school day on March 27, and both events will be rescheduled for April 2.

Permission slips were distributed to all high school students last week and are due to homeroom teachers by Friday, March 15.

If students do not bring back permission slips, they will not participate. Students not participating in the cleanup will be assigned to a study hall for silent reading and school work.

Signups will be done this week. Seniors will sign up first on Monday, 3/11, juniors on Tuesday,  March 12, sophomores on Wednesday, March 13, and freshmen on Thursday, March 14.

The annual Spring Fling in the afternoon will allow students to take advantage of many activities, including but not limited to gym and fitness room activities, a courtyard tailgate, board games, and several movie options in rooms throughout the school.

Spring Fling signups will be done on the Eagle Eye next week.
