Last year three students and one teacher went through a long process to get the Tyrone High Spanish Club officially established within the school.

The co-founders and officers for the group are President Lizatia Ake, Vice President Meghan McMullen, and Secretary Lilly Wise. The three students petitioned through the and faculty the student body to get the needed support. After receiving it the three students went to the school board, presenting their organization in hope of approval.

“The students took full initiative on applying to get the club approved and passing the appropriate materials to the administration. I was impressed with their initiative and effort,“ said Olivia Grugan, teacher advisor for Spanish Club.

Ake is very passionate about Spanish and hopes to one day become a Spanish teacher. In result of her passion for the language/culture, Ake told two of her friends of her ideas, and the two agreed to assist Ake’s pursuit of a new club.

“I really wanted something that would allow people to come and have fun while also learning about another culture. This club will give both of these things a chance to happen,“ said Ake.

To be in the club it is not required do to speak the language nor do is it needed to have to have taken a Spanish class. McMullen had taken two years of French when she decided to take part as an officer/club founder.

For club activities, the group plans to have movie/game nights, holiday activities, music videos, el fútbol, the YAN Halloween event, and Spanish cuisine nights.

“Spanish club is going to be a great opportunity for students to learn about a culture other than their own,“ said Wise.

The first meeting will be held on October 12th from 3:15-4:00 in Grugan’s room (Room 206). Spanish Club’s mission is to explore another culture while at the same time having fun. They hope to see many faces at the first meeting.
