Tyrone High School’s award-winning indoor percussion squad and colorguard gave their families, friends, and supporters one last performance of their 2026 show, Anchor, before heading off to the 2026 ACC Championships in Wildwood, New Jersey.
The indoor percussion team has won their division the past three years and hopes to earn a fourth straight title this weekend.
Hock credits their success to months of planning and practice.
“We started writing the show many months ago. It’s always a work in progress,” Hock said.
Once the show was written, practices began in November.
The group rehearses six to nine hours a week, on top of students’ regular school responsibilities.
“It takes a lot of skill,” Hock said. “You can’t just walk in and spin a flag, or play really fast runs. It takes a lot of skill that they have been developing over the years.”
For students, the show is as exciting as it is demanding.
Junior Cliff Wilson summed up this year’s production in a single word: “Crazy.”
“It starts off quiet, and then it gets crazy, then it drops down again, and then I rip a crazy solo,” Wilson said.
Freshman Melina Corrigan is new to the team, but she is enjoying her first year and encourages others to join.
For most of the team, the experience is about more than just the music.
“It feels amazing. It’s really fun, and [students] should give it a try,” Corrigan said.
Corrigan said that she made new friends on the team.
Sophomore Jackson Conrad reflected on how the indoor percussion group shapes students beyond the music.
“For me at least, it’s been understanding the significance of all this, because it’s more than just music,” Conrad said. “It’s very important socially, and just to see people grow like that. It’s really special to me.”
