The “small but mighty” Tyrone band has been recognized for excellence and received many awards over the years. However, one thing that the band hasn’t had for many years is a large number of musicians. TASD Band Director David Hock would like to change that and is encouraging all interested fourth graders to attend an informational band meeting at 7 pm on Tuesday, May 7 in the high school band room.

“Music is something that exists in all of our lives, whether you are listening on the radio or iPod, watching a movie, TV show, or a favorite YouTube creator, or participating in many other day to day activities where music is present. Music is everywhere so learning to create it can be very exciting,” said Hock. “Beyond that, learning an instrument builds a new skill that you will take with you the rest of your life, something you will value, become passionate about, and can show off to your friends and family.”

To help students decide on what instrument they would like to play, throughout May Mr. Hock will also offer lessons in the evenings to give students a chance to try out some instruments. Please contact Mr. Hock to set these up.

The meeting on May 7 will cover how fifth grade band works, scheduling, what instruments students can play, how to obtain instruments, and more.

“It’s important to remember that band happens during the school day and any student can learn an instrument in band and it won’t interfere with other sports or after school activities,” said Hock.

The deadline to sign up for fifth grade band is Friday, May 31st.

The High School Band Room is located in the music wing beside the high school auditorium.

Students who are unable to attend the meeting can contact Mr. Hock at [email protected] or by phone at 814-684-4240 -ext 3306 or visit the band web page by clicking HERE
