Swimmers Suffer First Loss of Season to Tough Clearfield Team

Mae Decker, TAHS junior, starts off the meet strong swimming the backstroke in the girls medley relay.

After a couple of close finishes in the first two meets of the season, the boys 200 medley relay team of Jacob Decker, Matt Lenze, Songmian Wang, and Hjalte Skov broke the school record against Clearfield with a time of 1:49.42.

This record keeps has been topped each year for the past three years. 

“The feeling of awe has stayed the same each time [we’ve broken the relay record],” said junior Lenze.

Unfortunately, both the girls and boys team lost to Clearfield. The girls were defeated 67-103, while the boys were crushed 58-112.

Girls: Tyrone- 67, Clearfield- 103

The team of Maddie Coleman, Fiona McConnell, Mae Decker, and Sarah E. Hoover earned two second places in the 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay.

“I hope most of the swimmers make Districts or improve their times and that we can win more meets,” said Victoria Reese.

Sophomore Coleman placed first in the 50 free, breaking the 26 second barrier with a time of 25.82. She also worked for a second place in the 100 free with a 56.69 time.

Bishop Guilfoyle junior McConnell secured first place in the 100 breast (1:16.92) and a third place in the 50 free (28.39).

M. Decker stole two second places in the 200 free (2:16.21) and in the 100 back (1:06.40).

Sophomore S.E.Hoover took two second places in the 100 breast (1:18.25) and in the 200 IM. She dropped three seconds in the IM for a final time of 2:33.48.

We only lost by 30 points and we had good competition so most of us improved times.

Junior Cate Baran earned third place in the 100 fly. Her time was 1:23.13.

Freshman Reese placed third in the 100 back with a time of 1:09.53.

Freshman Sarah M. Hoover improved by ten seconds in the 200 free (2:25.82) and by 28 seconds in the 500 free (6:51.23).

Bellwood senior Gwen Daugherty dropped a second from her previous time in the 100 breast for a final time of 1:26.39.

Maddie Diebold worked off seven seconds in the 200 IM for a finishing time of 3:30.43.

Boys: Tyrone- 58, Clearfield- 112

Jacob Decker, Matt Lenze, Songmian Wang, and Hjalte Skov broke the 200 medley relay school record with a time of 1:49.42. With this, the team earned second place in the medley event and a second place in the 200 free relay.

Chinese foreign exchange student Wang stole two second places in the 200 IM (2:12.08) and in the 100 fly. In the fly event, he dropped a second for a finishing time of 58.45.

Danish foreign exchange student Skov secured two second places in the 100 breast (1:10.18) and in the 100 free. In the freestyle event, he improved by a second for a 53.56 time.

“The team did awesome. It was our best performance against Clearfield in years,” said Lenze.

Senior J. Decker worked for a second place in the 100 back (1:00.65) and a third place in the 50 free (24.17).

Bellwood’s Hunter Gregg placed third in both the 200 free (2:18.96) and the 500 free. In the 500, he dropped nine seconds from his previous time for a time of 6:19.77.

The team did awesome. It was our best performance against Clearfield in years.

Bishop Guilfoyle junior Lenze took third place in the 100 breast. His final time was 1:10.82.

Junior Ben DelBaggio dropped nine seconds in the 500 free (8:00.50) and three seconds in the 200 free (2:51.72).

Senior Carter Maceno worked off eight seconds in the 500 free. His finishing time was 6:21.50.

Colin Yaudes improved by a second in the 100 free for a final time of 1:05.67.
