The classic Where in the World is Carmen SanDiego has been modernized for a new generation.

“Where in the world is Carmen San Diego?” A question that many 90’s gumshoes obsessed over.

For generations finding the Scarlet Ghost was every kid’s mission in life, on and off screen. Originally an old school PC game centered around clues and cultures, “Where in the World” focused on finding the latest historical object stolen by Carmen, having players act a member of A.C.M.E., an organization dedicated to monitoring evil.

The players would interview nearby witnesses about the crime and anyone who might be wearing a scarlet trenchcoat. As she was known to make a purposeful public appearance before each crime. Players would look for clues that would determine Carmen’s location, such as different flags on cars, brochures, dance lessons, even types of food. The game was designed to get kids excited about, not only world geography, but about the cultures around the world too, trying to show kids that the world is larger than their living room. And it worked, big time.

Carmen San Diego has worn many hats over the years, but it’s not her famous red Fedora we’re talking about. La femme rouge has gone from pc and board games to 90’s animation and game shows, to even musicals and Netflix show’s,  transforming the world’s most famous latina’s status from “villainess” to “Robin Hood Style hero”. The question was never “Where in the world is Carmen SanDiego?” but rather “Where hasn’t she been?”

Up until recently, the answer to that question was Google Earth. A few months back Netflix released a series reboot, simply titled “Carmen San Diego” transforming the famous Argentinian into a heroine, complete with a new origin story. Carmen’s mission in life is to stop the secret organization that created her,  known as V.I.L.E. In order to expose their villainous ways, Carmen steals from their warehouses, making her presence as obvious as possible for the authorities, in the hopes that they will follow her lead, and finally expose V.I.L.E.

Excited about the new series, Google Earth partnered with Netflix and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, the original creator, to create a game that pays homage to the originals while reigniting a generation’s worth of interest into the world around them, all while educating all people, young and old.

This game is a masterpiece worth playing. Not only does it truly pay homage to the original, but it grabs the player’s attention with its unique animation style and interesting storyline.

“Where on Google Earth is Carmen San Diego?” teaches player’s about investigative strategy, cultural diversity, and gets them interested in the history of the world’s greatest thief and her effect on pop culture throughout the years.
