Tyrone senior three-sport standout Ross Gampe announced Wednesday that he will attend the Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the fall, where he will play tight end for the Crimson Hawks.

“I loved all the coaches and they are a great program,” said Gampe, “They compete for the PSAC championship and national titles year after year.”

Tyrone Head Coach John Franco said he was happy to learn that Gampe had chosen IUP. Franco and his sons are also former IUP graduates and players.

“Ross is one of the best football players that I have ever coached. He led our team in receptions, touchdowns, and quarterback sacks the past two years. He is one of the hardest workers and smartest players I’ve ever seen. There is no doubt in my mind that he will have a great career at IUP,” said Franco.

Gampe is part of a 2023 IUP signing class of 21 incoming freshmen and five transfers for Head Coach Paul Tortorella’s Crimson Hawks.

“Our coaching staff did an outstanding job in finding high-quality student-athletes with character and talent on the football field. We believe this is a group that can help carry on the winning tradition within our program,” said Tortorella.

Gampe chose IUP over Clarion, Lock Haven, Shippensburg, California University of Pennsylvania, and the US Naval Academy.

Gampe led the Golden Eagles last season with 35 receptions for 547 yards, averaging 60.8 yards receiving per game, and had 8 touchdowns on the season.

Gampe is also a multi-sport athlete, competing in basketball in the winter and baseball in the spring.

“I considered playing baseball in college but I like the physicality and the atmosphere of football,” said Gampe.

This past year, the IUP football team was the powerhouse of the PSAC conference, winning the conference championship. They finished with a 10-2 record and were NCAA DII quarterfinalists.
