Tyrone Girls Soccer Wins Big Against P.O., Falls to Central

The Tyrone Girls Soccer team is in the home stretch of the 2016 season, and each game is becoming crucial to keeping their playoff hopes alive. After last Monday’s game was postponed due to rain, the Lady Eagles had a week of practice to prepare for the remainder of the season. They split their next two games to move to 4-7 on the year.

Tyrone 6, Phillipsburg-Osceola 1

Fresh off a 4-day reprieve, Tyrone entered Saturday’s match against Phillipsburg with a “take no prisoners” attitude. Just seven minutes in, Tyrone Senior Audrey Bowser was fouled in the box, and Sophomore Riley D’Angelo was able to convert the penalty kick to secure an early lead for the Lady Eagles.

Bowser would later score with a shot that soared into the top corner of the net to give Tyrone a 2-0 lead with 20 minutes to go. By the end of the half, another goal from both D’Angelo and Bowser propelled the girls to a 4-0 lead.

The offensive bombardment by Tyrone continued into the second half, when Bowser recorded another tally and Sophomore midfielder Maqqel Kosoglow lofted a ball over P.O.’s keeper to bring the team’s total to 6.

Phillipsburg’s Kyra James scored their lone goal off of a breakaway with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game.

Freshman keeper Kelsey Johnson recorded 9 saves to secure the win.

Central 7, Tyrone 1

If soccer was only played in thirty minute games, Tyrone would have upset the defending District 6 Championship team on Tuesday. However, after Maqqel Kosoglow scored off of a ball from her sister, Mia, Tyrone was unable to maintain their 1-0 lead for long.

After Kosoglow’s goal, it seemed as though Tyrone had tickled the Dragon’s tail. Central answered just seconds later to tie the game, and added to more to put Tyrone down 1-3 going into the half.

Despite a valiant effort by D’Angelo, Tyrone was unable to increase their tally in the second half. Central, however, scored 4 more and the Lady Eagles fell 7-1.

Tonight is Senior Night. Tyrone will take on Huntington looking to help keep their playoff hopes alive and to avenge a 6-2 loss from earlier in the season. Seniors Riean Minnich and Audrey Bowser will be honored before the game.  The game begins at 4 pm.
