Tyrone Girls Soccer Opens Season 2-1

After graduating five starters and six seniors from last year’s playoff squad, the Tyrone girls soccer team is still trying to find consistency and confidence. With an entirely new defense and the loss of 2015 leading scorer Marissa Panasiti, a learning curve is to be expected.

Coming off a record-breaking season, the team is trying to replicate some of its past success and redeem itself from last year’s early playoff exit.

Tyrone 5, P-O 0

The Lady Eagles opened the season with a 5-0 victory at Phillipsburg on Tuesday. Despite a slow start, two goals apiece from Riley D’Angelo and Audrey Bowser plus an additional goal from Elina Lure propelled Tyrone to the win.

Freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Johnson recorded her first career shutout, making some impressive saves to seal the win on her birthday.

Central 7, Tyrone 0

The Lady Eagles then hosted the defending District 6 champions Central Lady Dragons for Thursday’s home opener. After about twenty minutes of solid play for the Tyrone, Central opened up the scoring and didn’t yield, routing Tyrone 7-0. Central previously downed Everett and Clearfield 11-1 and 11-3, respectively and remain the favorite to repeat as Mountain League Champions.

Tyrone Junior Tori Crabtree found the back of the net in the second half for Tyrone, though the goal was waved off by the official on a call that could have gone either way.

Tyrone 5, West Branch 2

A much improved West Branch team came by Harry K. Sickler Athletic park on Saturday. Tyrone, missing two starters due to injury and illness, dropped an early goal but led at the half thanks to a hat trick by D’Angelo.

In the second half, Aaryanna Wright slipped a ball by the keeper and D’Angelo added another to bring her total on the day to four. Freshman defender Cate Baran stepped up in her first career start to help Tyrone seal the 5-2 victory.

Tyrone will be back in action tonight when they travel to Huntington, hoping to replicate the football team’s Friday night result with another win over the Bearcats.
