March Renaissance Teacher of the Month: Chelsey Markel
EE: Why did you decide to be a teacher?
CM: “I really enjoy helping others and wanted to be a part of something that does that every day. I also really enjoyed my math classes in high school and looked up to all my teachers.”
EE: How long have you been teaching?
CM: “This year is my fourth-year full time at Tyrone, but since graduating I have subbed and taught for six years.”
EE: Have you taught anywhere else other than Tyrone?
CM: “I have subbed in multiple school districts and had some long term teaching assignments as well: Bellwood, Hollidaysburg, Clearfield, Altoona, Philipsburg.”
EE: What’s your favorite teaching memory?
CM: “I don’t think that I have just one. My favorite memories are when students open up and feel comfortable to come to me if they need something. I also enjoy seeing students have that moment where everything starts to make sense.”
EE: If you had chosen not to follow this path, where would you be now?
CM: “I probably would be doing something science related. I started college in the Forensic Science program.”
EE: Where did you attend high school? And college?
CM: “I went to Tyrone and graduated in 2008. I went to Penn State and graduated in 2012.”
EE: What are some of your favorite hobbies?
CM: “I enjoy going to the gym, spending time with my family and friends, traveling, and coaching volleyball.”
