As Congress met to confirm Joe Biden as the next President of the United States a hoard of Pro-Trump protesters stormed the Capitol Building.

This occurred shortly after a Trump rally in which President Donald Trump had protested the election results.

A mass of his followers then began a march to the capital and began storming the US Capital building as the unsuspecting representatives and senators were in the process of affirming the Electoral College results.

Vice President Mike Pence was whisked from the scene. Earlier in the day, in open condemnation of his own Vice President, President Trump tweeted, “Mike Pence didn’t have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our country and our Constitution, giving States a chance to certify a corrected set of facts.”

In the stand-off between police and protestors, one person was reported to have been shot. The capitol building went into lockdown and the mayor of D.C. has ordered a 6 p.m. curfew.

Rioters smashed windows, broke into congressional offices, and stormed the floor of the House and the Senate chambers.

The U.S. Capital officially went into lockdown soon after the initial assault leaving lawmakers and officials in their separate buildings.

“It’s a mess out here. I hear a lot of non-lethal munitions going off, and look, this is a disaster,” said Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois in a Fox News interview.

“This is despicable. This is not who we are as a country,” agreed Republican Rep. Michael Waltz of Florida.

After open condemnation from both political parties, Trump has been pressured to condemn the mob action.

President-elect Joe Biden addressed as well. “I call on President Trump to go on national television now to fulfill his oath and defend the Constitution by demanding an end to this siege,” said Biden.

Shortly after President Trump released a video in which he maintained that the system was rigged against him, but urged his supporters to “go home.” He finished by saying, “We must have law and order.”

Abraham Lincoln said, “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms it will be because we destroyed ourselves.”

As the polarization created by the 2020 election continues, the country wonders if this prediction will come to pass.
