Orange Crush: Tyrone continues success, defeats Bald Eagle 42-14

Hunter eclipses 1,000 yards passing in lopsided victory

In a lopsided victory the Golden Eagle offense scored early and often Friday night on their way to a commanding 42-14 victory over Bald Eagle. Their fourth win in a row was dictated by big plays; most notably the first two plays of the game. A 70 yard run by Gary Weaver and a 54 yard touchdown catch by Parker Mitchell gave Tyrone a 14-0 lead in the first six minutes.

We really proved we could play and win against bigger teams that we’ll face later this season

“It was a much better week of practice this week,” said Head Coach Jason Wilson, “we came out fast and jumped on them early. They were a big team and we knocked the wind out of them early and kept that momentum rolling.”

A 35-0 lead at halftime was highlighted by a two minute drill to end the half, the 5th successful such drive in the first six games. The drive ended with an eleven yard touchdown pass to Mitchell, his second of the game.

Weaver added another touchdown as well, tying he and Mitchell at eleven total touchdowns on the season. Tight end Michael Lewis also had a touchdown reception in the first half, his second on the season.

Drew Hunter had yet another dominant performance, going 10-12 for 229 yards and four touchdown passes. His last throw of the game was as a successful as his first, a 51 yard connection to Cullen Raftery. He now has 1,088 yards and 16 passing touchdowns with no interceptions.

“It’s a pretty cool achievement to have considering all the great quarterbacks to come before me,” said Hunter, “But I’m not really worried about that. I’m more concerned about getting better each week and helping the team win games in any way I can.”

Bald Eagle’s points came in the final quarter against Tyrone’s second string defense. Mitchell had his first takeaway of the season with an interception in the second quarter that stopped one of the Eagle’s few productive drives of the game. It all started up up front for the Golden Eagles who held Bald Eagle to a measly 42 yards on the ground.

“They were pretty big up front,” said Senior tackle Nick Bonsell, “We really proved we could play and win against bigger teams that we’ll face later this season.”

Any win is a success for the Golden Eagles, however some wins mean more than others over the course of the season. Next week’s game against Clearfield is one that Tyrone would love to have and for good reason. The Bison have had Tyrone’s number the past three seasons, beating them all three times and two of the occasions by one point.

“It would mean a lot to beat this team,” said Bonsell, “We have all the motivation in the world. It’ll be a real challenge for us to go their and win, but I’m confident that we can do it.”
