New Staff Profile: Mr. Kalb Provides Math Help for Students

One of Tyrone High School’s newest faculty members, Mr. David Kalb, has joined the math department for the 2018-19 school year as an Americorps volunteer.

AmeriCorps is a federally funded program that puts paid volunteers in positions to help their communities in three priority areas: education, environment and human needs.  The program provides valuable work experience for its participants and vital community service to the organizations that it serves.

The funding for Kalb’s position comes jointly from the Intermediate Unit 8 and the Tyrone Area School District.

Kalb is a full-time tutor, providing extra help for students who need assistance outside of their scheduled math class.

Kalb grew up in Westport, Connecticut, and received his bachelor’s and master’s degree in chemical engineering from Bucknell University, and has also earned a master’s from Penn State University.

In the spring of 2018, Kalb spontaneously decided to change his career path to education.

“[Teaching is a] more valuable use of my time… teaching is the most important thing I can do,” said Kalb.

Kalb may be helping with the math department, but ideally he would love to teach chemistry.

“I enjoy chemistry because I’m interested in finding how things work,” said Kalb.

Everyday for two periods Kalb helps out in math teacher Christopher Shedd’s room.

“He’s very good with his interactions with students and helping them understand their homework,” said Shedd.

As a high school student, Kalb was involved in many different organizations, including: F.I.R.S.T. Robotics, Volleyball, and S.L.O.B.S., which stands for the Service League of Boys. Kalb’s mom came up with the title and the group did community service together. He was also Vice President of Student Council in high school.               David Kalb

Today he continuous to play volleyball, and coaches a League of Legends team at Penn State University.

League of Legends is a multiplayer online battle arena video game developed and published by Riot Games for Microsoft Windows and macOS.

“It’s looked at the same as any sport [at PSU] which technically makes me a D1 coach,” said Kalb, “I think that is so funny.”

Kalb has his own philosophy for education.

“Every student matters, and every student can learn.”
