The Super Bowl was on February 3, 2013, and there has been a lot of talk about the 34 minutes without power. But the big and brawny football players couldn’t hold a candle to the 34 little puppies playing in the Puppy Bowl.
“I think it was cute,” Liz Hill, TAHS senior said.
In its ninth year, the Puppy Bowl hosted dogs of all types. Sally, a Dachshund/Basset hound mix who loves to steal slippers, scored the first touchdown of the game. The other gleeful puppies trailed behind her, attempting to stop her, but she scored anyway!
The game is simple: the officials hand the little ones toys and they run back and forth. There really aren’t any rules to it.
But, as always, the puppies love to mimic their master, and so the Puppy Bowl was born!
There are quite a few notable differences, though. For one, the puppies aren’t nearly as violent as the professional football players. There were a few nips and bites, though. For another, there were hedgehog cheerleaders and hamsters in a blimp.
There was also a half time show with cats that TAHS Economics and Drivers Ed teacher, Cummins McNitt, found hilarious. When asked if he watched it, he burst out laughing, saying that while he didn’t watch it, if he “had known there was a kitty half time show, I would’ve watched.”
While not following the rules of a traditional football game, the Puppy Bowl did a pretty good job mimicking the real thing, because there were touchdowns, a half time show, and the “field” was painted to look like a real football field.
It was “as realistic as you could make it, with puppies,” said Liz Hill. Although, Lindsey Kemp, TAHS sophomore, did say it would’ve been more realistic “if the dogs were in pads and helmets.”
