The Lady Eagles kept the game close through four quarters but fell to 0-2 with a 40-45 to Penns Valley.

I think we are playing with great energy and effort, but we still need to find our identity and learn how to win. We played well enough to win, but we need to capitalize on other team’s mistakes and cut down on our own mistakes

The Lady Eagles played from behind from the first quarter but came back to make it a one-score deficit in the game’s final minutes.

“I think we are playing with great energy and effort, but we still need to find our identity and learn how to win. We played well enough to win, but we need to capitalize on other team’s mistakes and cut down on our own mistakes,” said Tyrone Head Coach Mike Whitling.

Sophmore guard Claire Lehman was also pleased with the team’s effort but also sees room for improvement.

“Defensively, I think that we pressured well, but we have to figure out our foul game. Offensively, I think we have to execute better, such as slowing down and making better passes. Overall, we hustled and played well,” Lehman said.

Tyrone came out explosively, sophomore guard, Alayna Woomer, made a 3-point shot within the first 5 seconds, and senior guard Bree Paul followed up with a layup.

However, as the first quarter developed, the Lady Eagles struggled to break Penns Valley’s strong press, leading to multiple turnovers and open layups.

The first quarter ended with Penns Valley up 15-11.

Sophomore point guard Claire Lehman started the second quarter strong, collecting a steal and getting an assist as Alayna Woomer would drop in a layup.

Penns Valley continued to score, however, as Elle Dinges responded with a 3-point shot following Lehman’s steal.

The Lady Eagles kept up their good defense, pressuring the ball and keeping Penns Valley’s drives to a minimum, forcing them to shoot from deep. The half ended with Penns Valley up 26-19.

Tyrone came out after halftime, determined to close the gap.

Alayna Woomer put some work in the paint, driving for multiple layups.  Freshman Brielle Parker and junior Alayna Greene also scored on a Tyrone run, closing the gap heading into the fourth quarter.

The Lady Eagles battled aggressively against the Lady Rams in the final quarter. The Lady Eagles were under pressure, which led them to start fouling, giving the Lady Rams free shots on the line.

After multiple layups and made free throws by Penns Valley, they were leading 42-33 against Tyrone halfway through the quarter.

But with just two minutes left in the quarter, Alayna Greene drove to the hoop, making a layup, and Alayna Woomer found herself at the free-throw line, scoring two points.

The Lady Rams struggled to score, while the Lady Eagles continued to try to close the gap with a minute left and the score at 42-37.

With 30 seconds left, Rylan Crowell passed the ball from half-court to Bree Paul, who scored two points, making the score 39-42.

In an attempt to win the game with a steal, Tyrone fouled and gave Penns Valley another point, ending the game with a score of 40-45.

The JV team had a win with a score of 49-19.

The Tyrone Lady Eagles play next on Wednesday. December 13 against the 0-1 Bald Eagle Lady Eagles. JV starts at 6 pm, followed by the varsity tip-off at 7:30 pm at Bald Eagle Area High School.
