Lady Eagles Building on 5-3 Start

Returning five starters from last year’s squad that went 11-5 and lost in the District VI semifinals, the 2022 Tyrone Lady Eagles volleyball team is off to a promising 5-3 start in the first half of the season.

“I think the season is progressing well and the team is competing more and more each day,” said Tyrone Head Coach Alesha Weaver.

The Lady Eagles are led by seniors Reagan Irons, Elaina Gelhman, and Piper Christine, junior Maddy Rockwell, and sophomore Kylee Nelson.

The varsity squad added seniors Rylee Poorman and Tasanee Hensley, juniors Tiffanie Tuskovich and Brianna Harris, and sophomore Taylan Mcglynn.

The girl’s biggest win so far this season was against Penns Valley on September 20th. The Lady Eagles won 3-2 in a very back-and-fort match. The scores of the game were 25-15, 21-25, 23-25, 26-24, and 15-13.

Seniors Reagan Irons and Piper Christine stood out when it came to stats. Irons sparked the team with 22 kills, four blocks, 36 digs, and 19 service points. Christine had 18 kills and five blocks.

Sophomore Kylee Nelson had 50 digs and 23 service points. Maddy Rockwell delivered 49 assists and 23 digs.

On September 29th, The Lady Eagles faced Philipsburg. Tyrone lost the match 0-3. This game was the most significant loss because beating Philipsburg has been a goal for this team since the Lady Mounties won the District 6 title both in 2020 and 2021.

The girls wanted this win and fought for it each set. Unfortunately, the scores of the sets were 20-25, 23-25, and 16-25.

Elaina Gehlman and Piper Christine were the leading front-row players in this match. Gehlman had seven kills, and Christine had six kills and three blocks.

Maddy Rockwell and Kylee Nelson were also a big part of this game. Nelson added 14 digs, and Rockwell with 20 assists and 10 service points.

The 2022 season may be a the halfway point, but the Lady Eagles are not finished yet.

“The door is wide open for this group of young ladies, and I think they have proven they are up to anything being thrown at them,” said Alesha Weaver.
