The boys cool down after their season opening win vs. Hutingdon

Tyrone Boys Varsity Soccer Team earned their first win of the season last night beating Huntingdon 3-2 in a hard-fought battle.

“We were relentless. Our boys fulfilled their roles and were able to gut out an absolute dogfight against a strong Mountain League team,” said Tyrone assistant coach Dustin Elder.

Going into the game the coaching staff made some key position adjustments emphasizing getting the ball in the back of the net while continuing to hold a solid defense.

Senior Mason Thomas was moved to center back along with senior Brendan Andrews. The defensive wings were senior Abe Black and sophomore Brayden Daniels. The center midfielders were seniors Kelton Raabe and Andrew Tornatore. At the outside midfielder positions were freshman Elijah Knarr and Rocky Romani with substitutions of Kevin Fink and Eric Sims. The strikers were brothers Alex and Aiden Taylor with Landon Bungo in goal.

In the first half, the game was fast-paced with both teams fighting for ball control.

Possession changed often but Tyrone was working the ball down the field frequently.

Midway through the first half, the ball was sent deep into Huntington territory and Alex Taylor was able to deliver a header that resulted in Tyrone’s first goal to make the game 1-0.

After this goal neither team scored for the remainder of the first half.

Going into the second half, Tyrone was ready for the fight ahead as this was the first time this season the Eagles have had a lead.

Alex Taylor found the back of the net once again to make the game 2-0 with 20 minutes left in the game.

After Tyrone’s second goal, Huntington intensified their attack sending more men downfield and changing their approach to more offense.

With around 18 minutes left in the game, the Bearcats were finally able to score making the game 2-1.

Fatigue was setting in Tyrone’s players as they only have two substitutions on their bench. Barely 2 minutes later Huntington fired in another shot into the goal tying the game 2-2.

But Tyrone battled hard and with 10 minutes left in the game. Senior Alex Taylor scored his 3rd goal of the day to give Tyrone the 3-2 lead.

The Eagles defense stepped up for the remainder of the second period, allowing Tyrone to win 3-2.

“Switching up our offensive game plan allowed us to get down the field and get more shots in. When we got the opportunity to score, we did; we made very few defensive mistakes. Most importantly everyone played for each other, that was the main key, that we were together,” said Elder.
