Girls Volleyball Comes Back from Two Set Deficit to Defeat Penns Valley 3-2

The win was one of the biggest comebacks in Tyrone Volleyball history

The Lady Eagles match against Penns Valley started out poorly for the Tyrone spikers as they dropped the first two sets, 25-14 and 25-20. Rallying back from two sets down is no easy task, but the Eagles were able to regroup and notch one of the program’s best ever comeback victories against the Mounties 3-2 on Thursday, September 8.

“It was definitely the most exciting volleyball game I’ve ever played and I think I can say that for the whole team as well,” said senior Alexis Cannistraci, “Hopefully this will encourage people to come out and watch more games because we’ve proven to be a winning team.”

Defensive failures and a lack of communication led to the 0-2 start.  However, after the second set loss captains Maddie Veit and Alexis Cannistraci talked to the team and refocused them on what they needed to do to win. The team came out strong in the third set with Cannistraci scoring six points by using a technique called a slide.

A slide is when the setter sets the ball towards the right side of the net and the hitter approaches from the left to get a kill. Penns Valley’s defense crumbled after getting hit with Cannistraci’s slides.

The tide turned as the Eagle won by a score of 26-24 in set three, 25-20 in set four, and 15-6 in set five.

In the last three sets Tyrone outscored Penns Valley 66-50.

“The girls were resilient when down 21-24 in the third set,” said head coach Mike Kraft.

Many of the points lost in the first two sets were from missed serves that went into the net.

Cannistraci earned 18 service points, and Brianna Foy and Emily Fusco both had 12 service points.

Lea Crofcheck had 30 assists and Torrie Foy recorded 20 digs.
