Eagle Eye Explainer: Week 10 Football

We explain why our Week 10 opponent was not known until this week

Tyrone’s week 10 varsity football opponent has been set. The 6-3 Golden Eagles will host the 6-3 Forest Hills Rangers at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 27th at Gray Vets Field.

But many fans have been asking: Why has the opponent for week 10 been a mystery until this Monday?

Originally scheduled as a home game, the game has been marked “opponent TBA” since the schedules came out.

The answer lies in the new Laurel Highlands League Championship format.

In the new league, the East and West divisions compete in week 10 of the regular season based on seedings.

Number one seed versus number one seed, two versus two, three versus three, and so on.

Under this format, Tyrone, as the fourth seed in the East, will play Forest Hills, the fourth seed in the West.

All East teams will host this coming weekend. In 2024, the West squads will host East opponents.

The Laurel Highlands Championship game will also be this Friday with the Richland Rams traveling to Martinsburg to face the Central Dragons.

Richland, the current top seed in District 6 Class 2A with 1,300 points, has outscored its opponents 326-110 this season. Central, the current top-seed in Class 3A with 1,170 points, has a 320-103 scoring margin.

This system will allow each team to theoretically have an evenly matched week 10 opponent to finish out the regular season.

The other week 10 games in the Laurel Highlands are as follows:

Friday night

2 seeds: Penn Cambria (8-1) at Bald Eagle Area (8-1)
3 seeds: Chestnut Ridge (7-2) at Clearfield (6-3)
4 seeds: Forest Hills (6-3) at Tyrone (6-3)
6 seeds: Central Cambria (4-5) at Penns Valley (5-4)
7 seeds: McCort-Carroll Catholic (3-6) at Philipsburg-Osceola (3-6)
8 seeds: Somerset (3-6) at Bellefonte (1-8)
9 seeds: Westmont Hilltop (2-7) at Huntingdon (1-8)
10 seeds: Greater Johnstown (0-9) at Bellwood-Antis (1-8)

Saturday night

5 seeds: Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic (5-4) hosts Bedford (3-6) at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The Tyrone-Forest Hills game will also be Tyrone’s Senior Night, with pre-game senior activities beginning at approximately 6:35. Tyrone will recognize the senior members of the football team, cheerleading team, and marching band.

Pre-sale tickets for Forest Hills at Tyrone are available in the athletic office all week. All season ticket holders have a week 10 ticket and all passes will be accepted for the week 10 game.
