Double Win Over Ligonier Boosts Swim Team’s Confidence

The girls and boys swim team edged out Ligonier Valley on Wednesday, January 31st. After the half time, Ligonier Valley was only four points away from both Tyrone teams. Further into the meet, the girls were tied 47-47. However, after the girls 100 yard backstroke, it was clear who the winner was. Tyrone’s Mae Decker, Cate Baran, and Lucia Isenberg swept the event, taking first, second, and third. The girls ended winning 97-73, while the boys broke the 100 barrier with a 102-62 score.

Girls: Tyrone- 97, Ligonier- 73

Lucia Isenberg, Sarah Hoover, Sarah Manna, and Cate Baran placed first in the 200 medley relay. Two other girls relay teams also stole first in both the 200 and 400 free relay events.

Fiona McConnell, Maddie Coleman, and Mae Decker were all individual double winners from the girls team.

Bishop Guilfoyle’s McConnell earned two first places in the 200 IM (2:35.21) and the 100 breast (1:17.45).

“We did awesome! The boys and girls won. Getting first, second, and third in the backstroke really helped the girls point wise,” said McConnell.

Freshman Coleman worked for both of her first places in the 50 free (26.10) and 100 fly event (1:11.55).

Sophomore M. Decker placed first in the 500 free (6:01.48) and 100 back (1:09.59).

Baran earned two second places in the 200 free(2:28.60) and 100 back (1:12.67).

Manna worked off a second place in the 100 free event for a time of 1:05.99. She also took a third place in the 50 free. Her time was 29.11.

S. Hoover placed second in the 100 breast event with a time of 1:18.52. She also secured a third place in the 200 IM. She dropped a second from her previous time in the IM to finish with a time of 2:36.67.

“We did a great job overall and we all tried our hardest and it paid off in the end. The girls were tied after the first half, but then we worked together to win the meet,” said S. Hoover.

Junior Olivia Thomas worked for a third place in the 100 free event with a time of 1:08.68.

Isenberg placed third in the 100 back with a 1:16.50 time.

Bellwood junior Gwen Dougherty dropped six seconds in the 200 free (2:37.11) and three seconds in the 100 breast (1:28.86).

Boys: Tyrone- 102, Ligonier- 62

The team of Bryce Bauer, Jacob Decker, Carter Maceno, and Matt Lenze earned two first place in the 200 and the 400 free relay events.

Lenze and J. Decker were the only individual double winners from the boys team.

Bishop Guilfoyle’s Lenze placed first in the 100 fly (1:02.30) and the 100 breast (1:09.42). He dropped two seconds in the fly and a second in the breast.

J. Decker stole two first places in the 100 free (54.11) and 100 back event (1:04.95).

We did good. Both teams came out and gave it their all in each race and we won because of it.

Bauer placed first in the 200 free and dropped two seconds from the previous meet. His final time was 2:15.95. Bauer also took a third place in the 50 free with a time of 27.00.

“We did good. Both teams came out and gave it their all in each race and we won because of it,” said Bauer.

Freshman Colin Yaudes worked off a second place in the 200 IM (2:40.30) and a third place in the 100 breast (1:17.71).

Maceno secured a second place in the 500 free with a time of 6:45.73. He also placed third in the 100 fly with a 1:14.11 time.

Bellwood’s Hunter Gregg earned a second place in the 200 free dropped five seconds from the previous meet. His final time in the event was 2:23.61.

“We all did amazing  and won the meet. We all encouraged each other to the extreme,” said Gregg.

Nick DelBaggio placed third in the 200 IM, finishing with a time of 2:50.09.

Ben DelBaggio earned a third place in the 500 free event with a 7:59.84.

Senior Matt Beam improved by two seconds in the 100 fly to place with a time of 1:25.17.

Morgan Myers worked off 10 seconds in the 500 free to finish with a 8:46.27 time.

Madyson Bungo improved by four seconds in the 100 back, finishing with a 1:38.55 time.
