Boys Tennis Prepares For Districts With an Improved Record

The Boys Tennis team reached a major milestone this past Friday. In what ended up being a double header against a tough competitor, Windber, the team was able to power through and pull out with both victories.

Ethan Vipond, Trevor Fink and Lewis all pulled off singles wins leaving no room for Windber to declare a victory in the first round of matches. However, tragedy struck when Lewis informed the team he was unable to play another singles match due to injury. Coach Irvin turned to AJ Grassi to fill his spot. The choice payed off as Grassi was able to beat Lewis’s opponent. Vipond pulled off another win while Jake Meredith and Fink lost. With a doubles match left on the table, Ethan and a recovering Michael were able to win the match and bring home the second win as well.

“Tennis was okay. If I may, this would be a great time to bring both attention and awareness for grass milkshakes. Seemingly disgusting, there protein packed shakes both benefit our environment and keep our liver in check. At me on Twitter for me details,” said Michael Lewis about his close win at Windber.

A few days before their dual wins, the Golden Eagles lost another close match to rival Huntington. Due to a duel sport conflict with track and field, the boys were short handed once again but made the most of the 2-5 loss. Ethan Vipond and AJ Grassi both won singles matches.

“Ethan played extremely well against Huntingdon’s number one. He struggled a little in the second set at times but [he] recovered to get the win,” said Assistant Coach Jacob Moll.

Noah Irvin, Trevor Fink, and freshman Caleb Orr lost in their singles matches.  The team couldn’t get the needed “W’s” in their doubles matches to win overall.

This past Monday the boys played another double header against Tussey Mountain. Each match came down to the doubles games if Tyrone wanted to win, but sadly could not pull through on any of the sets. Tyrone then turned right around to play Juniata on Wednesday which resulted in some tough games but an overall loss.

With a record of 3-9, the district contenders are excited to see a record with some wins and prepare for districts. District Singles were April 25 while District Doubles will be May 2. Vipond and Grassi will represent the team as the singles players while the teams of Vipond and Lewis, and Meredith and Irvin will be at doubles. The Eagle Eye will run a separate story to cover the district action.

“It will be nice to see how far I can make it. I want to do better than the past two years (losing in the first round),” said Ethan Vipond.

“I’m excited to go to districts, I worked really hard for it,” said Jake Meredith.

To finish out the year the team will face,  Mountain League rival Clearfield, Hollidaysburg, and Central Mountain. With a few matches left to give the district contenders practice, we wish them all luck and for competitive matches!
