L-R: The Bull Pen’s BBQ Buffalo wings, Buffalo-butter garlic wings, and Buffalo bacon ranch wings

Wings are universally loved and one of the favorite foods in the area. So we decided to jump on the bandwagon and give our opinion on the area’s finest local wings. The Bullpen in Tyrone is our first stop.

We judged three varieties of the Bullpen’s wings based on four categories: presentation, wing quality, sauce, and hospitality in order to grant an overall score on our patent-pending wing-o-meter.

For this review Andrew (A) ordered BBQ Buffalo wings, Bryce (B) enjoyed some Buffalo-butter garlic, and Christian (C) indulged in some Buffalo bacon ranch. The price for a dozen wings was $10.68.

Presentation

For this category, we based the rating on how the wings looked before we began to chow down.

There isn’t much to complain about. When we first got the wings, the sauce was more concentrated on top and the wings rested in a red plastic tray arranged in a mediocre drenching display. For A’s wings, there was a clear division of BBQ and buffalo sauce. For B and C, while the sauce remained tasty the overall distribution lacked.

Wing Quality

For this category, The wings will receive a rating based on the overall quality, juiciness, and the bone to meat ratio of the chicken itself.

Overall the wings had pretty good quality meat. There were a few that may have been a little smaller than what we would have liked. Overall, they were a good standard size wing. The texture and meat were the best assets of the wing. It had good crispy skin and still maintained succulent meat inside.

Sauce

The sauce category is about, you guessed it, the SAUCE, we are judging this category on flavor, consistency, and coverage.

For A’s sauce, it was an insult. At first glance, the sauce appeared to be dumped on the wings, clearly not sauced and tossed. Only one side was covered with sauce on multiple of the wings. Additionally, the basket lacked buffalo sauce. There was clearly not an even ratio of BBQ and buffalo.  On to the sauce itself, the BBQ sauce tasted off and was extremely thick. It tasted of apple butter, an odd ingredient in barbecue sauce.

For B’s sauce, it had a very good buffalo flavor and they didn’t skimp on the garlic which was definitely a plus in my book. But as said by A, the sauce was literally one-sided and just thrown on the wing.

For C, the sauce was scrumdiddlyumptious. There was an even balance of spice from the buffalo sauce and cool tang of the ranch. Of course, some bacon made those wings even more OG. The absence of a perfect score came from the lack of sauce. There was hardly enough sauce for the wings to swim in, making the wings a tad bit underdressed.

Hospitality

This category reflects upon our overall experience at the restaurant taking into account: wait time, service,  and friendliness.

A, B, and C can applaud the Bull Pen in the event that when our drinks were finished, the waiter tended to them without asking, exhibiting immense initiative.

While our ratings for this aspect appear low, A, B, and C can applaud the Bull Pen on the event that when our drinks were finished, the waiter tended to them without asking, exhibiting immense initiative. However, our wings took approximately 25 minutes to reach our table, prolonging our mouth-watering starvation. The checks followed suit as they took their time arriving as well.  This slow pace most likely can be attributed to a lack of staffing during our time in the restaurant. However, we’re mainly here to score the wings, not the service.

Final Score

A – 4.75/10     B – 6.5/10     C – 6.75/10

This being our first wing review, the BullPen is our current reigning wing champion.  But will it retain the title after our next wing review: the world famous Mac’s Market/Gridiron?
