Both Tyrone Bocce teams earned their first official win of the season against Southern Huntington. The match was also the first win for the Tyrone Orange team.
Tyrone Black won 10-1, and Tyrone Orange won 6-3.
“Team one got ahead in score and ball total early in frames, which is key to being able to win games,” Tyrone Coach Shannon Davis said.
Tyrone Black started hot, scoring two points in their first rolls, then scoring three right after getting to a quick 5-0 advantage.
Southern Huntingdon then scored its only point of the match, making the score 5-1. After that, Tyrone kept piling on points slowly until the final set of rolls, where the score was 7-1.
Tyrone scoring three points in the final rolls was important because the number of points scored and the team record determine who makes the playoffs.
“Our teams were very energetic and supportive and brought out the best in each other, even though Southern Huntingdon was a hard place to play at,” Tyrone Coach Kate Coltenbaugh.
After the halftime break, Tyrone and Southern Huntingdon seniors were recognized, and then match two got underway.
Southern Huntingdon scored the first point of the match, and Tyrone quickly responded to make it a 1-1 match. This was the theme of the match: one team scored and the other team answered. Tyrone scored one, and right after, Southern scored one to make it 2-2.
Tyrone then got a one-point lead, where Southern needed one to tie and two to win the frame. They tried their best, but were only able to score one point, tying the match 3-3.
To settle the tie, a Golden Frame was held for this match only.
A good roll by Tyrone started the frame, which led Southern Huntingdon to use all four of their balls to try and take the points. Tyrone then rolled more good balls to give them three crucial points to make the final 6-3 in favor of the Golden Eagles.
“It was a nice accomplishment to get the win. We’ve worked hard, so it was good to see it pay off,” said Grace Naylor on winning her first-ever bocce game.
The results move both of the teams’ records to 1-2, with Black having 14 points and Orange having 17 points on the season.
Tyrone will finish its regular season with a makeup game at Huntingdon on Friday, February 6th.
