Two Tyrone Wrestlers Move to Regionals

Two Tyrone wrestlers, senior Jamal Hicks and freshman Hunter Walk, are moving on to the Southwest Regionals at Indiana University of Pennsylvania this Friday and Saturday.

Walk (106, 22-12) is the District 6 four seed and will wrestle freshman Joey Fischer (31-5) from South Park High School in the first round.

Hicks (126, 13-6), also a four seed, will wrestle junior Z.J. Ward (31-5) from Freedom Area High School in the opening round.

The top six finishers at Regionals will qualify for the PIAA State Wrestling Tournament in Hershey on March 8-10, 2018.

The Eagle Eye interviewed Hicks and Walk about their upcoming matches. Here’s what they had to say:

Eagle Eye: What are you looking forward to at regionals?

Jamal Hicks: “The competition.”

EE: What was your toughest match at districts?

JH: “Semis because my hand was hurting.”

EE: How far are you hoping to go?

JH: “All the way to the top.”

EE: Did you expect to place fourth at districts?

JH: “No. I knew I’d place, but I wanted first.”

EE: Who do you think will be the toughest person to wrestle in your weight class?

JH: “Gavin Teasdale (from Jefferson-Morgan HS), because he’s going on his 4th state championship run.”

Eagle Eye: What are you looking forward to at regionals?

Hunter Walk: “To see what it’s like and the atmosphere. Also to go and compete.”

EE: What was your toughest match at districts?

HW: “The quarterfinals and my 3rd and 4th match.”

EE: How far are you hoping to go?

HW: “To place top six and make it to Hershey.”

EE: Did you expect to place fourth at districts?

HW: I really didn’t think about what place I was going to get, but just to go out and wrestle my best and see what happens.”

EE: Who do you think will be the toughest person to wrestle in your weight class?

HW: “Everyone that is tough and ready to compete.”
