May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and considering recent events in the school, Tyrone sophomores Brayden Parsons, Owen Oakes, and Kaleb Sweitzer organized a National Honor Society community service project to sell bracelets in support of the Adam Zook Memorial Fund.
The students raised over $150 by selling awareness bracelets in Tyrone school colors and mental health colors, each with hashtags used at the annual Adam Zook Memorial Run.
The phrases “Positioned for Purpose” and “Hope Is Here” are important messages on the bracelet to remind the wearer that no matter what, there is always help you can seek out and other ways to approach the problems and thoughts you are having.
All proceeds from the sales were donated to the Adam Zook Memorial Fund. Fund Director Hayden Zook will give the money back to the school to help those with mental health issues and suicidal thoughts.
The Adam Zook Memorial Fund, founded in 2019, supports local mental health awareness and suicide prevention.
Adam Zook was a Tyrone High School Class of 2016 graduate. He was very involved in high school as a member of the track and cross country teams, the Editor-in-Chief of the Eagle Eye, the mock trial team, the drama club, and numerous other clubs and organizations at Tyrone High School.
After graduation, Adam enrolled in Slippery Rock University to pursue his passion for journalism. Just like in high school, Adam was chosen to be editor-in-chief of the Slippery Rock student newspaper for his senior year, but in July 2019, the summer before his senior year, Adam tragically took his own life.
Sweitzer, Parsons, and Oakes said they chose this charity to spread awareness about suicide prevention across the school while giving money to a local group that supports Tyrone students.
