The Tyrone swim team heads to the District Championship Meet at the Penn State Natatorium tomorrow with high hopes of bringing back several district medals, a top three team finish, and maybe even a state qualifier or two.

“We are bringing one of the biggest teams to districts that I have ever had,” said Tyrone Head Coach Tom Getz. “We also have some really good seeds, with many in the top six.  I will be looking for both teams to improve upon last years finishes.”

Sophomore Madison Coleman is the top seeded individual Tyrone swimmer in the meet.  She is seated second in the 50 yard freestyle (25.65) and first in the 100 yard freestyle (56.55).

On the relay side, the boys 200 yard medley relay team of Jacob Decker, Matt Lenze, Songmian Wang and Parker Bayard are also seated first with a time of 1:49.42.  The same four swimmers are seated second in the 400 yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:32.92.

Only the top finisher in each event makes it to states, but Coleman and several other swimmers will have a good shot at becoming Tyrone’s first state qualifiers in over a decade.

“We have some kids that are close in individuals and relays as well.  If the kids put together some good swims, anything could happen,” said Getz.

The girls 200 yard individual medley of Mae Decker, Fiona McConnell, Madison Coleman, and Sarah Hoover is seated second with a time of 2:01.30. They are also seated third in the 200 yard freestyle relay (1:49.27).

Junior Fiona McConnell is seated third in the 200 yard freestyle (2:13.38) and third in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:15.84).

Junior Mae Decker is seated fourth in the 200 yard freestyle (2:13.51) and third in the 100 yard backstroke (1:05.17).

Sophomore Sarah E. Hoover is seated fifth in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:16.43) and sixth in the 200 yard individual medley (2:30.83).

The 200 yard freestyle relay of Hunter Gregg, Carter Maceno, Nick Delbaggio, and Collin Yaudes are seated second with a time of 1:36.90.

I expect the team to place in the top three for both girls and boys.  I also would expect to have quite a few swimmers make the podium and put together some personal bests

Junior Songmian Wang is seated second in the 200 yard individual medley (2:08.45) and second in the 100 yard butterfly (56.42).

Senior Jacob Decker is seated fourth in the 50 yard freestyle (23.87) and second in the 100 yard backstroke (59.48).

Freshman Parker Bayard is seated fifth in the 50 yard freestyle (23.93) and fourth in the 100 yard backstroke (1:00.66).

Junior Matt Lenze is seated third in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:09.99).

The team has been working hard to get ready for the championship meet, according to Getz.

“Last week we tried to get in as many double practices as we could, but the weather made that difficult.  I think they are in a good spot and ready to go,” said Getz. “I expect the team to place in the top three for both girls and boys.  I also would expect to have quite a few swimmers make the podium and put together some personal bests.”
