Bellefonte Pins Tyrone in Season Opener

The Tyrone Golden Eagle wrestling team was outmatched on December 11th by the experienced Bellefonte Red Raiders, losing by the score of 66-8.

The Golden Eagles gave up eight pins, two forfeits, and two regular decisions, coming out with only two wins: one by junior Alex Weaver and one by freshman Korry Walls.

Weaver had the first win of the night, beating Bellefonte’s Stephen Ivicic 7-2. In the first period, Weaver earned a takedown and three near-fall points. Weaver deferred at the start of the second period and Ivicic chose down to start. The only points scored in the second period were by Ivicic when he got a reversal on Weaver, making the score 5-2. Waver then chose down to start the third period and earned a two-point reversal on Ivicic and rode him out the rest of the period, making the final score 7-2 and earning three points for the team score.

In the last match of the night, Walls tech-falled Garrett Choates from Bellefonte in the second period. Walls started off strong getting a takedown and earning three sets of three near-fall points in the first period. Walls deferred and Choates chose neutral to start the second period. Walls then took Choates down again and earned another three near-fall points to end the match. The 16-0 victory earned the team five points, making the final match score 66-8.

Junior Hunter Walk had a close match with Lane Aikey, losing 7-4. Senior Mason Walls also had a close match with Bellefonte’s Jude Swisher, losing 4-2. In his first career match, junior Dean Grassi faced Ethan Richner who placed sixth in states last year.

Tyrone’s next match is December 17th at Penns Valley and their first home match is December 19th against Hollidaysburg.
