Voyzey breaks school and meet record in high jump at 88th annual Shippensburg Invitational
Sophomore Jordan Wiser also placed top ten in the 1600 meter run.
Sophomore high jumper Erika Voyzey broke her own school record and tied the overall meet record at the 88th Annual Jack Rodick Shippensburg High School Track and Field Invitational on Saturday April 19, 2014.
Voyzey’s record setting jump of 5′ 8” crushed her closest competitor Tabitha Miller of Christopher Dock High School, who was runner up with a jump of 5′ 2”.
“Erika sets the example of being a hard worker and thereby enjoys great success,” said head track coach Chris Shedd.
“Nothing comes from just showing up with natural talent in this sport. Success requires a certain amount of natural talent combined with a strong work ethic and a competitive spirit. Erika has all three aspects and we’re enjoying watching her excel,” added Shedd.
“I expected myself to clear 5′ 8”, but I wasn’t sure I could do it at a big meet. There is always a lot of pressure. It was so exciting, even the other coaches were happy for me,” said Voyzey.
“By the end of the season, I hope to have 5′ 10”” added Voyzey.
“At the beginning of the season Erika said her goal was 5’10”,” said Shedd, “I thought 5’8” was good goal. I knew that she would get the 5’8”, but I am thrilled that she got it this early…I now think she is right that 5’10” was the right goal, maybe more.”
According to Shedd, Voyzey is now in a four-way tie for the number one spot in Pennsylvania in the high jump.
Voyzey also placed 11th in the triple jump with a distance of 32.00 feet.
Sophomore Jordan Wiser also competed at the meet, finishing 10th in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 5.45.31 and 14th in the 800 meter run with a time of 2.34.82.
