Tyrone Wrestling Earns Home Win Over Ligonier Valley
The Tyrone wrestlers beat the visiting Ligonier Valley 44-30 on Thursday, January 9th. The team won key matches to secure the win over the Rams.
The match started off at 285, with Ligonier Valley’s Finn Bradley pinning Tyrone Junior, Parker Allen, in three minutes and eight seconds.
Freshman Korry Walls from Tyrone had a big match as he faced Ligonier’s Josh Harbert. Coming into the match, Harbert was ranked second in the district and Walls was third.
“[Korry’s match] was one of the ones that if we win it makes the path a little bit easier for the rest of the night. It was a huge match for Korry and I thought he wrestled really well,” said Tyrone Head Coach Terry Tate.
Neither wrestler scored in the first period of the match, and K. Walls chose down to start the second period. K. Walls scored the first points of the match when he got a two-point reversal, followed by a two-point near-fall. J. Harbert chose to start down for the third period, trailing 4-0. The only point earned by J. Harbert came when Tyrone’s K. Walls did an illegal move before riding him out for the rest of the period. K. Walls’ 4-1 regular decision win gave the team three points making the team score 6-3 Ligonier Valley.
At 113 junior Hunter Walk faced Rigel Madden from Ligonier.
Walk started off strong, quickly taking down Madden and earning two sets of three-point near-falls in the first period, making the score 8-0. Madden chose to start neutral for the second period and Walk quickly got another two-point takedown and then pinned Madden in three minutes and five seconds.
Tyrone’s Ashton Sipes followed Walk with another pin against Ligonier’s Bruce Krieger in one minute and twelve seconds.
Tyrone forfeited the match at 126, making the team score 15-12 Tyrone. Tyrone senior Mason Walls had the fastest pin of the night, pinning Ben Plowman in twenty-two seconds.
Ligonier Valley’s Ryan Harbert then pinned sophomore Gavin Frazell in one minute and thirty-seven seconds.
Tyrone sophomore Dominick Maloney picked up the 8-2 win at 145 against Khorter Drury from Ligonier.
Maloney scored the only points in the first period with a takedown. At the start of the second period, it was Tyrone’s choice but Maloney deferred and Kh. Drury chose the bottom. Kh. Drury escaped but was taken down once again by Maloney, making the score 4-1 going into the third period. Maloney chose to start the period down and quickly got a two-point reversal. Kh. Drury got another escape and Maloney answered by getting one last takedown, making the final match score 8-2 and boosting the team score 24-18 Tyrone.
At 152, Ligonier Valley’s Peyton Matson pinned Freshman Jermaine Myers from Tyrone in one minute and thirty-six seconds.
Another pivotal match was Tyrone’s Dean Grassi against Ligonier’s Klaidon Drury.
Kl. Drury took down Grassi and was leading 2-0 into the second period. Grassi had the choice but deferred, and Kl. Drury chose to start on the top. Grassi earned a penalty point when Kl. Drury locked his hands. Grassi then escaped and took Kl. Drury down. In the final seconds of the second period, Kl. Drury got a two-point reversal, tying the match up at 4-4. Grassi chose down to start the third period and quickly escaped. In the last minute, Grassi took Kl. Drury down again, and then pinned him with fifteen seconds left in the match.
Tyrone Junior Alex Weaver faced Kyrie Miller from Ligonier at 170.
Weaver started off with a two-point takedown, but Miller quickly got a reversal, making the score 2-2 at the end of the first period. Miller deferred at the start of the second match and Weaver chose to start on the bottom. Weaver escaped and earned another takedown, but gave up a reversal in the last seconds of the second period. Miller chose down to start the third period but was unable to get out. Weaver earned a penalty point in the third period, making the final score 6-4, and moving the team score to 33-24 Tyrone.
At 182, Sophomore Zack Lash got the technical fall over Ligonier’s Isaac Piper in the second period.
Lash racked up eleven points against Piper in the first period and only gave up one escape. Piper chose down to start the second period and earned a quick reversal, but Lash recovered with a reversal of his own and had two sets of three-point near-falls to end his match with the final score of 19-3.
Tyrone Sophomore Jason Barr was trailing against Ligonier’s Killian McWhorter 5-3 before he took McWhorter down and pinned him in one minute and twenty-one seconds.
Ligonier ended the night with Logan Shaftic pinning Tyrone’s Nick Lewis in one minute and nine seconds, making the final team score 44-30 Tyrone.
The Tyrone wrestling team will be back in action on Tuesday, January 14th against Bald Eagle.
