Tyrone students raise $703 for Huntingdon Salvation Army

In just three school days, Tyrone students collected $703.42 in donations for the Huntingdon Salvation Army Church.

The fund drive was a response to last weekend’s fire at the Salvation Army Church that destroyed or damaged Christmas toys and clothes meant for over 200 needy area families.

The fire occurred just days before the donations were to be distributed to local families.

Members of the Youth Action Network (YAN) Club at Tyrone High School sprang into action to help their neighbors in Huntingdon.  The students collected cash donations in the high school lobby each morning and at all lunches throughout the week.  Students, teachers and staff in the all three schools contributed money to the cause.

In addition to the monetary donations, several donations of toys, games and clothes were also accepted and sent to the Huntingdon Salvation Army.

“I think it’s a truly beautiful thing to be able to help.  It shows that Tyrone really is a caring school,” said senior Kendra Wertz.

“I’m just happy that we were here to help the Huntingdon Salvation Army in their time of need,” said senior Adam Zook.

All items donated by area residents are being sorted and bagged at the AGY Building in Huntingdon (the old fiberglass plant) on Friday night and Saturday.  Anyone interested in helping should call Captain Charity of the Salvation Army at (814) 251-2005.
